Verney Carron vs Searcy vs Chapuis
      #141278 - 28/08/09 11:29 AM

I got the bug bad and the only rifle I take on hunting trips as of late is my Chapuis 9,3x74R but would love to move up to a larger rifle. One never knows when a killer moose or wolf will try to attack me and I need a stopper!

I simply can not afford a Heym, period. This leaves me with another Chapuis, Searcy or a Verron Carron (which I know nothing about). Searcys are nice but ejectors are a $2,000 option on the Field Grade model. The Field Grade model is within reach but are ejectors worth 20% of the rifles price? Can they be added after the rifle is built? I do like the fact Butches shop is in the USA and he has a great reputation for taking care of customers. If I choose a Searcy I would most likely pass on the ejectors as they are simply to pricey.
Articulated front trigger can be added to the VC for $250.

Caliber will be 450 3 1/4 NE simply due to the huge supply of bullets. Merkel is out because they do not cater to the left hand crowd.

My main goal is a larger double to use for hunting. Safe queens have no use for me. Any and all comments are appreciated.

Chapuis is out. They will not make a 450/400 or a 450.

For firing a third and fourth back up shot ejectors are an disadvantage, as they go click-click and the empty cases hit the ground loudly when you open the rifle for reloading. With a non-ejector gun you can open the gun silently and put the cases in the pocket, without being detected by a twice hitted badtempered m'bogo twenty steps away. By the same reason you need a gun with a silent safety.

I have used rifles with both with and without ejectors.
I would not be overly upset not having them in most hunting situations.
Hunting Female Elephant might be one of those times I would prefer Ejectors.

I think the Verney Carron Demas model is one of the nicest looking big bore doubles on the market. I hope to handle one at the upcoming Vintage Cup in late September.

I decided to go with the Searcy Field grade model and will place the order in October. As of now it looks like it will be for the 450 NE with 26 inch barrels.
Like the fact that most people claim Butch's customer service is outstanding and that I do not have to mail the rifle out of the country if something goes wrong.

Ejectors can be added to the Searcy after the fact if you decide that you need them, but after hunting with extractors you will not find ejectors to be all that crucial.

Does anyone know what VC uses for their receiver?

The more I shot my Chapuis the more I found myself opening the rifle slowly to catch the empties. Guess ejectors are not really needed.

Did Butch charge extra for the 26 inch barrels?

No he did not. Happy I placed the order as his web site now shows the Field Grade model is being discontinued as of 1 Jan 2010.
