Jeeez - you sure pick tough ones.
Contact IMA (www.ima-usa.com)
They recently brought in a load of Nepalese guns.

Hi DoubleD,

I asked about the markings on indiansforguns website. One of the gentlemen there translated it and I believe he is right.

It is written :

Shri(a salutation) 3 Chandra Shamsher Jung
Year 1967 (Is as per Vikram Sambat = Hindu calender. It is a popularly used calendar in India and the official calendar of Nepal)

No. 130

Shri 3 Chandra Shamsher Jung Bahadur Rana was the fifth Prime Minister of Nepal from the Rana dynasty. He was born on 8 July 1863, and died on 26 November 1929.

The year marking 1967 (As per Vikram Sambat = Hindu calender ) means 1910 (As per Christian calender).

Now that you have what you wanted, could you please tell us about the gun? Thank you.

Best-
Vikram

Vikram,

Thank you very much for this.

The rifle is one of IMA's $189 as is Gahendra's. When recieved it was covered in dirt and filth, and a waxy grease. I am in the process of cleaning this one up.

The gun is cleaning up pretty good

You are welcome,DoubleD.

Interesting rifle there and I hope it comes back to good shape in your hands.Any idea about the make and calibre of it? Thank you.

An aside, that salutation "Shree" is followed by the number "3" before the name. Traditional in those parts to say the salutation thrice before you utter the name of a person of that status.

Thanks for the pictures.

Best-
Vikram

Well it is a Gahendra and is in .577/450. It is part of cache of arms brought out of Nepal by Atlanta Cutlery and International Military Antiques a few years ago.

Despite the date the Nepalese Government certified that all these rifle were made pre 1899.

Some speculation is the date is an acceptance date.

Back in the 70s there were "mint" condition Gahendras being imported by Springfield Sporters or one of the other old time importing companies. Same markings but as new condition. I picked up two for around $59.00 or so. Martinis were a few dollars more, but I managed a couple of them too. Oh I wish that I still had them.
