New Watch for hunting & general use ?
      #140329 - 10/08/09 10:24 PM

Im looking for a new watch to wear all the time , but mostly as a good hunting watch !
I have noticed in Australia & Africa , that alot of the watches clients (and some pros) wear are not suitable , giving a lot of sun strike & many have weak straps or fasterner pins & smelly ,sweaty , bloody soaking type straps !

Any body know a good ,not too expensive watch , good for Hunting ?

Cheers if you can help !

I like the Casio G-Shock. As a navigator, I appreciate the precision. The one I have now was set to the US Naval Observatory Master Clock on December 8, 2008, and has gained three seconds since then. The G-Shock has a solid reputation for being rugged. They are inexpensive, about $40 US.

Ten dolla. Rolex. Ten dolla. Fake watch. Ten dolla. You buy two?

Could resist having been in China recently.

hi sarg,

i have bought a simple modell from Fortis and i am very happy with it (www.fortis-watches.com) - from diving, travelling to hunting and daily use.

itīs a mechanic watch - so it has some "life in it" - i love this - and by the way, mechanic watches are more trustfull then any electric operated ones - all men, who must count on their watch trust more the mechanical ones: cosmonauts, pilots, divers, military special forces... and me... :-)

but of course it has itīs price - about 500 € I payed for mine...

the tritium illumination is strong - you could see clearly at night - something that counts for me as well, while pig hunting...

Nitrox , I missed that before & yes I have a Tag copy (knock off) my girl friend got me in Thailand , been going for 8yrs (not her, shes gone) now & works well , looks good (did, worn now, so's she) but not really a outdoor watch !

Thank you Pigeon , but a fair way out of my budget, even if it is great !

I have been looking at Timex Expedition /Camper/Military & Casio Pathfinder , seems straps are the problem on most of them !

Cheers

I have a Citizen Auotmatic (self winding) 200m SS Divers watch. It has been everywhere for 19 years.
Costs new now about Ģ 150.00

Been back to citizen once for a new glass just because it was so scratched and a new steel strap, cost about Ģ 50.00. It has never failed in all that time, been underwater countless times. Looks like a veteran from a war but still carrys on.

Can't recomend it highly enough..

Regards

Take a look at the Luminox SEAL with rubber band. I bought one about eight years ago. Very good watch, the luminous dial is really good. Every now and then you can find them at a really good price.

Sarg; I have broken so many watches over the years I quit wristband types entirely and for some years have carried a Swiss Army pocketwatch with 100% satisfaction. Has worked out very well. It's waterproof and has luminous hands and a traditional clockface. And it doesn't make noise! I have had a few watches I could actually hear when sitting on a deer stand. Have no idea if the DEER could hear them...

Anyway, after carrying it for a couple years I dropped it hard on the concrete pad in front of my shop and knocked some tritium {or whatever the luminous stuff is} off the hands. It still worked fine but I couldn't see the hands at night so I sent it to Swiss Army and they fixed it all up new and nice for me for free.

Wish I'd latched on to a pocketwatch like it 35 years ago...

And oh, yes, forgot.

Not much sun glint when the thing is stashed down next to its cousin The Pocketknife and the spare change.

How about Suunto?:

Or Sector (I have one and it serves me well):

129 USD

P.S. As a client - when I arrive in the camp, the first thing I get rid off is a watch - hard to beat that feel

The watch I still wear and use is a stainless steel Seiko Sports 100 bought in 1982. Waterproof, been dunked in the Indian, Southern, North Atlantic, Pacific, Mediterranean, Baltic, North, Timor - Seas and Oceans as well as many rivers and swamps. Getting close to the end of its life though.

One problem with wearing a watch on the left wrist and being a lefty shooter is that the metal buckle can indent the rifle stock. When I came to do up the well used stock on my Schultz and Larsen rifle I could not figure out the patch of small indentations/scratches on the stock just back of the wrist. Turned out the culprit was my watch strap buckle. Something to be aware of on a fine stock?

We need to know when the next Bledisloe test is on so we don't miss seeing our All Blacks trample those Wallabies under foot (again).

I've got an old Lorus that keeps time as well as Seiko and Longines watches I've been given - but it flashes in the sun. So, I've just bought a Chinese leather band with a cover for all of $22. With all the other costs, this will have to do for Mozambique.

Cheers

Hey, well done! I got my Sports 100 in Darwin in 1981, just got a new battery (6th?) the other day. It has done very well.

Being in the United States, I can tell you that we are not afraid of wearing stainless steel watches. We do our hunting in longsleeves and the watch does a pretty good job at staying concealed. I don't know of very many people who are concerned about the sunlight hitting it and spooking big game - maybe some wild turkey hunters.

It's always a good idea to have a decent watch when shooting the heavy concussion guns. I broke two cheaper watches out in the plains of the US. The watches stopped the moment the gun went off. The air is thinner up there and guns just "feel louder". My watches couldn't take it.

I have had pocket watches before and they work great. You can put the whole thing in your pocket (so you don't rip the chain off) and the glass stays scratch free unless you happen to do something stupid with it open.

I have a velcro-band on my fortis - so there is no metall except the watch itself...
another advantage is, IF one of the axes shoud break (those pins fixing the strap to the watch) the watch would not be lost like with others...

A Casio, and preferably one made in Japan and not China.

I love mechanical watches and like wearing a Rolex, Glashutte, or a A. Lange & Sohn, when the occasion fits. For hunting, however, I really like my Casio Triple Sensor Pathfinder.

Just got myself a Suunto core extreme red edition:

First impression - simple, big, thin & light. Main features: time/alarm, altmeter/barometer (with storm alarm), thermometer and compass...will report on issues (if any).

G'Day Fella's,

Whats a Watch?

Sorry it's been so long since I have worn a watch, I thought everyone else might be the same?
Apparently Not!
I haven't worn a watch since I purchased a Mobile/Cell Phone!

Hommer,

You are a practical man!

My choice for hunting in hot weather would be simple Citizen Eco-Drive BM6400-00E little north of $100.Its light simple and reliable and good looking watch.

Hamilton Khaki watches are great for outdoors too.

A big +1 on the Luminox. Have had it for about 8 years and never worry about it. Used it running impact hammers/air tools, has had gas dumped on it, and was wearing it when I low-sided a motorcycle. The bezel got ground down a little after coming into contact w/ the pavement, and cracked the sapphire--Luminox replaced both for ~$35 inclusive of return shipping and put a fresh battery in. I've also got a stainless Tutima Flieger (not the chronograph), which is a functional automatic for a lot less than a Breitling, etc. Been very happy w/ that one too.
