New Rigby Bolt Action Rifles.
      #140250 - 09/08/09 12:35 PM

We have an announcement of a New Rigby made in England in the DR Forum. It was also announced that they will make Bolt rifles based on a newly made Mod 98 design.

I would love to know more about these rifles as I think the Rigby Mauser was the absolutely best handling bolt action rifle ever made. Any information on these?

+1!

And I hope that they bring them out in the classic calibers - 275, 303, 350, 416 and 450.

Good hunting!

gentlemen

yes, we make our own line of 98 bolt actions as well, i hope that an official statment will be up later today, as this is not the department i work in, and i have limited knowlegde of prices etc.
I do know this, our new magnum action is larger than anything made on a 98 platform, and it is made by us, in london.

Best Regards

Peter

Good afternoon Gentlemen

The new 08 Magnum actions are designed from the ground up and manufactured in England.

She is fully 9 5/8” long and does not utilize components from any other manufacturer.
20% of the population are left handed so we wished to give them a complete left handed gun so we did so. She has left hand threads on the safety to ensure correct function, left handed cartridge stagger so that she loads from the correct side of the box a complete three position Left handed safety in fact She is a complete mirror.

She is in the final stages of testing. The materials engineers have determined that the ring hoop stress analysis indicates an increase of % 360 over that of an original Obendorf, we await the bolt lug shear tests as I write this today.

We took the decision to make the action longer than any other before for the following reason:

We could see in our lifetime the possibility of some jurisdictions banning the use of lead in bullets. This would, in order to make monometal bullets heavy enough for caliber, cause the necessity to make the OAL of some rounds longer. All other actions could suffer from a lack of action length and box room.
We did not want a future where one had to say “I love my Rigby, but I cannot shoot it anymore”

As we say on our web site we are building guns for this generation and the next to enjoy.

Best Wishes

The Directors, John Rigby & Co. (Gunmakers) Ltd., Jno.Rigby&Co.

".. action longer than any other ..."

Will no doubt be sought after for long "magnum" type chamberings and cartridges.

Will the bolts be produced on a 'custom' basis ie on the specifications of individual orders, or a stock range?

Cartridges/calibres to be catered for? Resurrection of the old Rigby cartridges?

This is forward thinking and I applaud it.

Thinking even further, I wonder if barrels should be given just a wee bit tighter twist in anticipation of heavier {longer's what counts} monometal bullets. Whether necessary or not, I wonder if some of the slug companies will head this direction, for marketing reasons or not.

rigby london,,good luck on your basically aready tried and proven venture given the name,,that being said i hope that the styling is like what i expect from a rigby ,mostly subdued ,how about guns without ,grip caps, cheeckpiece, horn tips, etc.also will the bolt handle be just like the pre war style (oberndorf but just a little closer to the stock)hope so , i,ll make a suggestion ,seeing that you can put that rigby name on them and also have british proofs i would say a line of commemorative guns in ,,275,303,400/350,350,416,,a lot of these guns cant be had that easily and sometimes the collector value keeps them out of the fields , i just hope the pricing is right ,,, i own 3 rigbys myself a 303,275, 400/350 .....paul

I maybe able to save you some money. According to my Nursing Text books, only 11% of the population are left handed. That will save you 9 rifles per 100.

Good to see you looking after the lefties. Have you emailed Boddington yet ? If you are targetting the USA market he will get you Lefty exposure sooner than anyone else.

Now that pictures of your double guns are coming out, when are you going to post pictures of your boltguns here? Please do post pictures of both the actions alone as well as of completed rifles.

Thanks!

A perfect cartridge for them to chamber would be the .322 Rigby Nitro. Kynoch has the original drawings for the case, but it was never commercially produced.

Just want to bump this thread. I think this is a huge thing and I wish Rigby's all the good fortune in the world. One of the greatest names, returned to London, doing best quality work, creating their own new actions from the ground up, and all in this economy!

Kudos. Any further news or photos? You can see some of the developing website through the back door if you google it, but it's still pretty rudimentary.

Please keep us posted.

JR Rigby London started up in London again last year.

The California company is also still operating.
