Cartridges for singleshots?

Hello Folks,

I'm considering having a hunting rifle built on the Stevens 44 1/2 action, and I'm thinking about the chambering. The action is suitable for rimmed cartridges. I like .264" and .277" bullets especially, but am also fond of .308", and I'm considering the quarter bores.

I'll be looking for 2500+ fps with hunting-weight bullets. The 30-40 Krag comes to mind as a possible chambering, and I'm familiar with a couple of 25 caliber wildcats based on the Krag case. Other than these, what are some suitable cartridges for such a rifle?

Considering your location you may have to go to Canada for these suggestions which are all very Pukka.

Or as suggested 7x57R

Ammo and/or components are relatively easy to get for all these suggestions.


I've seen a .303-7mm done too.

Why not try a 303/270
good ballistics
good bullet selection
and a rimmed case

The Stevens 44-1/2 action was not designed to operate at pressures produced by most of the cartridges suggested. A more realistic list to choose from would be:

22 Hornet
22 K-Hornet
225 Winchester
25 Hornet
25-20 Single Shot
25-35 Winchester
30 WCF (30-30)
30-40 Krag
32-20
32-40 Winchester
8.15X46R
348 Winchester
38-55
45-70
45-90
45-100
45-110
7-30 Waters

Of these, my choice would be the .25-35. It's about the diameter you specify. Factory ammunition and cases are available. It will meet your requirement of 2500+ fps with medium weight (for caliber) hunting bullets if hand loaded. If you needed a little more then why not chamber it for .25-35 Improved? You could still fire .25-35 factory ammo in the rifle. The .25-35 is one of the most "Improved" cartridges and benefits by a velocity increase of about 25%.

I once had a Stevens 44 1/2 that started life as a .22lr. The bore was corroded and pitted, but all other aspects of the rifle were crisp and clean with original finish.

A friend bought it in that condition. He had the barrel re-bored and chambered to .357 Magnum. The firing pin was bushed to center fire, and the breach block vented. He lost interest in it, and I got it from him. For years that was a great little "walking around gun" for me. It had a little Burrus compact 4x scope mounted on a nice tidy base that was milled to fit the octagon rear of the barrel.

I killed a lot of vermin with that rifle and one white tail deer. It was precisely accurate. There was virtually no recoil, and the muzzle blast was very soft. It was a great rifle.

Like so many nice guns, I sold it at the Tulsa gun show one day when I figured I had no further interest in it. Wish I had it back.

Stevens 44 1/2 actions are surprisingly strong. I once bought a rifle on such an action which was chambered for the .219 Donaldson Wasp, a notoriously high pressure cartridge. To add to the equation, the barrel used had originally been a .22 rimfire, meaning that the groove diameter was probably no more than .222". The owner had been blithly shooting .224 jacketed bullets in it, and it had digested them with no evident damage.

The attraction for me was that the action was equipped with a double set trigger, which I had wanted for a Schuetzen rifle. It is now a .28-30, and no longer subjected to the horrendous pressures it suffered in its previous incarnation.

The 44 1/2 is a compact little action and in my book capable of withstanding the same pressures as the Winchester Model 1885 High Wall. I would not think that it would lend itself to cartridges larger than .30 caliber however, simply because a rifle stocked proportionately with the action would be too light for the recoil generated by the heavier bullets. For a hunting rifle, I agree that the .25-35 (6.5X52) would be an excellent choice.

According to Frank DeHaas with a properly fitted firing pin it'll handle 50,000# cartridges but due to the small barrel shank the 30-40 and 45-70 sized rims are too big.

I have one in .38 Spcl. that I am thinking I will push the chamber to .357mag. on. They are a great little woods carbine for walking around with, far smaller and lighter than about anything else I have used. It feels like a .22 single for kids.
The .303 sounds stylish, but this carbine looks like it should have a classic American round in it. The .303 would be right in something with a British style.
