Hello André,

I will try to help you, but need more information. There is no convenient list of serial numbers for the BSA rifles...we can only compare features and numbers with other rifles and possibly date the proof marks. This can sometimes be pretty accurate, because we have sales ledger information for some rifles and we know when certain features were introduced. We can usually nail it down to within a few years either way.

Were is "D. 167" stamped on the rifle?
Are there any other numbers anywhere on the rifle?
Any proof marks, like a Crown over NP, and so on?
What is the barrel length?
What is the overall length?
What are the EXACT markings for BSA? Does it say "BSA Co." or "BSA Co. Ltd." or something else?
Can you please post a picture (it is worth a thousand words)? If you cannot post, please send me a PM and I will post it for you.

If you cannot take a picture, then I'll need to ask some more questions. But let's start with the above.

BTW, congratulations on owning this rifle!

Best regards,
JC5

JC5,

The rifle is on its way to me from Austria as we speak, so I can not read any makrings.
It looks like the one in the W.J Jeffery catalog from 1912-13 on page 59 maybe a no. 2 with round barrel.

Here are the pictures from the seller.

Thanks for helping out.

The rifle should be with me tomorrow or Thursday

Cheers,

André

André,
That is a beautiful rifle! Well done!

All I can tell you for now (until we see all the markings), is that it probably dates between 1899 and 1914.

Thanks.
I will get back with markings and some pictures of my own.
I think it is quite a nice rifle for my vintage collection.

Cheers,

André

It might be vintage but is still a great hunting rifle that I would use without hesitation on anything up to asian buffalo.
You will probably find that the sights are regulated for 215gn round nose projectiles.
A good example of a great rifle

Oh it will hunt trust me.
I will Shoot 215 grn Taipan bullets, the seller told me that they worked quite good.

I normally hunt with a 1914 mauser model M from 1914

André

Gentlemen,

Got the rifle today it is in good condition and a very handy rifle with great balance.

Hope this can help with the year of production.

Cheers,

André

Beautiful rifle! Now the bad news ... getting the 215gr Taipan is difficult as Taipan has cut back production due to domestic circumstances. Might be worth trying the Woodleigh 215gr. When my Lee Speed is restored that will be its projectile of choice. Just wish I had of grabbed some 215gr solids awhile back in case an elephant invades the garden.
Cheers...

Well we are down to between about 1897 to 1903.
Any serial number under the bolt handle and are there protectors on the front sight?

Hi,

Under the bolt handle is written number "4288".

What do you mean protectors on the front sight?? Like a hood?

Cheers,

André

Hi Andre,

As there is not much information available we have to do some guesswork.
The number under the bolt handle should be matched to a number on the barrel and action under the fore end - I assume this is a batching number for production.
Later rifles (after c 1900?) have the action number moved to the flat under the bolt handle and no new hand engraved serial number.
Early rifles usually had tall gaurd wings each side and integral with the foresight.
The two actions shown are about 1895 and 1904 judging by other features and markings.
My best guess is your rifle was made about 1899 - give or take a couple of years.

Regards - Andrew

Is there a number on the bolt handle or on the top-rear-flat part of the action where the bolt slides in?

Under the bolt handle is written 4288 and where the bolt slides in is written 88.

André
