Cast Bullet Loads for .416 Remington?
      #139900 - 02/08/09 04:05 AM

Anyone know where I can find some load information for shooting cast bullet loads in a .416 Remington Magnum? All I can find is what Accurate has for the 350 grain bullet, and I've asked Beartooth if they have any data for their 335 and 375 grain bullets.

I figure the cast loads will be more than enough for rolling feral hogs (the only thing I'll really be able to justify using a 416 on until I get the chance to go to Africa) and the most affordable way to shoot a bunch of rounds through it.

5744 loading:

Fill case to base of seated bullet; multiply by 0.4; that will provide velocity to 40% to 50% of full-power. Load up to 48% for max lead velocity loads. Max velocity & pressure between 60 and 65% of full case capacity.

From Terry Weiland's book. 5744 is pretty flexible as long as you start low and work up to a modest velocity. Bob

That is an interesting formula Bob. Is it powder specific? I use a different method to get load data.

I've used 5744 in obsolete levergun loads with varying success, but I've never seen that formula before. Hodgdon has a similar method for "light" loads using H4895: multiply the maximum H4895 load for any given bullet by 60%, and use that as the light load powder charge. I've only done that in 7mm-08 loads for my kids but I may contact Hodgdon about doing something similar in the .416 with cast bullets.

I really like my 5744 loads in .45-70. Great powder.

This is specifically for 5744. It comes from Terry Weiland's book on Dangerous Game Rifles. He has an appendix as I recall on downloading big bores. I took the text from the book and saved it. Bob

TAW1126, Not sure of the case capacity diferential between the 416 RM and the 404Jeffery, but I load and shoot mostly cast in my 404 with a 350gn in various alloys.
From a plinking load at 1400fps with 20gn Red Dot and WLR primers using 50/50 ww/Pb to a 1900fps load with the same alloy or straight ww over 63gn H4350 - ADI2209 with WLR primers through to lino at 2365 with WLRM and 74gn Varget - ADI2208 and a HT 90/10 ww/lino at 2416fps over 87gn H4350 - ADI2209 with FED 215's. All with GC and in Norma brass. A load for any and all occasions and any one of them would take a piggy.
