I have a Dakota Model 10 Magnum action that needs to be built up. My initial though was to build it up into a .375 H&H but I have been plagued by the thought of going big with a .500 NE. I have heard that Dakota has built a Model 10 in .505 Gibbs before, is a .500 NE too exotic? Balance may be tough with a cailiber this big, any thoughts?

Go with your heart.
Don't let the other choices distract you.

I think the .458 lott is a great choice for a heavy rifle. Plenty of ammo around if your rifle and ammo dont make it at the same time. Just a thought. The .458 is a capable round as well. Ammo and components are usually readily available and reasonably priced.

At one point, I had the even crazier thought of making it a take-down with barrels in 300 H&H, 375 H&H and 458 Lott. What couldn't you do with that?

At that point it's just an issue of funds.
How much money do you want to soak into the project?
I think that particular 3-barrel set would be quite cool.

On a single shot you should choose the .450 3 1/4" NE before considering the Lott.

How large is your action?

It's the magnum action. My consideration of the Lott was based on it having the same case head as the 300 and 375 so you don't have to swap extractors in addition to barrels.

Your gunsmith can take care of that small issue for sure.

Good luck with whatever you do.

Looking at ammo costs that just keep going up, up, up a .500 NE is going to be pricy (for that matter .458 Lott too!) On the other hand, the .375 H & H is made everywhere and it won't chew up your shoulder either. Frankly - they're all great choices, like tinker said "go with your heart".

I would have thought that it would be difficult making it heavy enough for caliber for the Lott and not unbalanced for .300 H+H.
