Sharpening my hunting knife
      #13948 - 25/04/04 05:32 PM

Does anyone know of a good kit for sharpening. I am not very good at it and when i try with a file i tend to end up with a blade blunter than when i started... I just want to know if anyone knows of a good wetstone kit for a beginner sharpener that won't break the bank.

I have friends that swear by the Lansky kits that are available from Cabelas here in the states. They have a jig that keeps you at the proper angle. Personally I prefer a plane old stone.

With practice, it is not to hard to get a razor sharp edge with a stone. And the stone will by far be your cheapest route. Steel is a factor on how hard a knife is to sharpen. Softer steels are the easiest to put a nice edge on but they will dull more quickly as well. Some of the real hard steels on the market make puting an edge on, with anything, difficult.

I just did a aearch on Cabals site & did not fingd teh Lansky. But Here are some others:

Good luck!

Thanks very much I contacted my local knife shop and they have had problems getting the Lansky sharpening kits in because of high demands and low amounts of shipping. But I will be able to get one soonish, price is quite good too, $59.95 thanks for the help IronBark

Got it today, wow, great kit, thanks I even got $5 off the original price. I tested it out on a couple of crappy old knives and they are now sharper than any of my knives were before!!! If I was a pig at the mate's farm I would be alot more scared now. Thanks for recommending the Lanksy kits, they are great.
