Yesterday the local ironmonger called and told med that he had put an anonymous 9 mm Mauser aside for me. I went there today and had a look. It was a simple small ring Muser without any factory markings. It had german control stamps, and I dated it to 1924. Very thin barrel with astoningshly round crown. Solderd bases for sights, front bead and double blade folding rear sight. Action without any engraving, standard military handle, standard military floor plate and double set trigger. Nice thin stock i neutral wood with round butt pistolgrip, steel back plate and swivel loops. 40 RWS cartridges (18,3 grammes/ 290 grs) in pre-war boxes.
Price 500 SEK, i.e. 60$.
Worth buying or not?

Heck yes. The DST's, bottom plate and triggerguard are worth 5 times that as parts.

Is this gun a transition Mauser {95/98}??

You didn't mention the condition of the bore, but even if it's questionable, the rifle is a real buy. I would think the RWS ammunition would be worth that much.

Probably, as the underside of the reciever had another form on the recoil lug. It was smaller than the usual m98 lug. The reciever had the same width all over. The bolt seemed to be a typical m98, cocked on opening.
A suspicious thought says, that the gunsmith may have turned down action to neater dimensions in order to make a light rifle - but then the barrel should have been fatter at the base. In fact it is one of the thinnest rifle barrels I've encountered.
Sadly, the rifle is totally anonymous. I just know that the stamps are german from 1924, and that the style has a typical sauerkraut scent. Much indicates, that it is a low grade rifle without any extras.

Fritz, my bear gun is a commercial 1942-built, Husqvarna M46, small-ring 94 action in 9.3x57. It weighs 6 pounds and is a delight to shoot and a real killer to-boot. What you are describing there is my gun's "cousin" in 9x57. A duplicate in every way as far as practicality and ballistics is concerned. Only difference is mine smells a wee bit like lingenberries, not sauerkraut... 
Anyhow, you'll really like it if you get it!

I am seriously considering to get a fine Husqvarna 46 or 146 instead, as they have better finish and perfect stocks for offhand shooting with iron sights. Perhaps they are the best rifles Husqvana ever built.

Recently, I paid 1/2 that price ($30.00) for a Mauser's extractor and the extractor ring for a small-ring 98 mauser I have in possession.
I haven't deceided witha to do with the rifle yet, but something in a .35 would be nice, especially on a 57mm case. Hey - that's exactly what you are looking at - well, very similar! A 98 action here is $150.00.
BUY IT!
I-too have a Husky M46 in 9.3x57 - delightful gun to carry and shoot. The rifles in this 'genre' are special.
I realize that 9.3x57 prefers lighter, shorter guns, but I like full length 24" bls. and 7 1/2 to 9 pounds for increased steadiness when shooting off hand. The barrrel length doesn't bother me for carrying around here.

I kinda do, except for this 46.
At 6 lbs and with excellent balance and handiness, it is hard to fault the longish tube! 
A 9x57, .35 Whelen or 9.3x57 in a light handy rifle or carbine is a delight.

I did not buy it. Even if it is cheap, it will block a place in my cabinet - here in Sweden we are only permitted to have six long guns. So I will go on looking for another interesting rifle.

..yes...one of the reasons I couldn`t move to sweden regardless of taxpurposes/benefits seen from a danish point of view. 6 guns ain`t much + my airrifles too would be considered firearms aswell. Lovely country with nice people though
