Westley Richards .318 Sidelock Double Rifle , was offered to me at $19500 but i think .318 is little small for a double. As my gun guru says Double should be atleast .375

318's make dandy little doubles and enough to shoot a Buffalo
if needed.

The 240gn bullets really do pack a whollop.

Nice gun BTW.

What's the History on the gun ?

Age, use, condition ?

Pretty hard to turn that Westley away. Whats up with the rear site?

Its a very very nice Doublerifle indeed. The prize is very reasonable for that rifle. The same rifle @ Champlins would cost double-up....atleast.

dandy

your gun guru is on drugs , the 318 is a grand caliber and one of the very good medium calibers there is, looks like a sweet gun, i would get it checked over by someone who knows dbl rifles very well.
i agree the rear sight looks out of place.

best regards

If you check on this very forum, there is an exquisite double rifle made in 22 lr by one of our own members. For anyone to say that small bore doubles are no good is silly, but then that's that person's opinion like the opposing one is the majority one here.

Nice rifle, though, despite the disapproval of whoever disapproves of it.

I agree it carries alot of punch but as you already know in africa .357 is minimum for dangerous game and believe me i don't want to look into eyes of Dugger boy with a .318 in my hand i cannot give you exact details because i have not seen the rifle myself but i can PM you info of the person selling it BTW its in U.K

Gatsby

Yes it was! The rear site was made that way by WR

rigbymauser

I agree 100%

Peter

I dont think he is on Drugs! but there are fairly good chances you would see him in an intoxicated state when he is around beautiful women :P i agree with him on .375 as minimum caliber (atleast for me ) if your serious about your shooting Double rifles are stoppers and they need to carry good amount of power i am talking of dangerous game here.

Mehul
Yes i have seen .22 doubles and they are very elegant and good for fun shooting.I have seen 22 calibre Double by Holland and Holland a prewar,There were very few smaller calibre Doubles made in the days when doubles were used in bush more than they were used at the range

To say small bore double are no good might be correct for a PH in bush and not so silly for somone who shoots doubles at shooting range, so all depends on what are you going to use it for.

He doesnt disapproves the gun! It is not the one for me.

This is bullshit. A lot more doubles were made in smaller calibres like the 303, 250-300 and what not than in the 465, 470, 500, 577 and 600. The bulk of them used on dangerous game would have been in medium calibres like the 450-400 and similar.

And vastly more double rifles made in the old days ended up in the Indian jungle than in the African bush. You can buy whatever the heck you want, but there is a lot of BS in some of the mine is bigger than yours stuff that you're bandying about here.

You forgot the 333, 375 2 1/2" as well as the .275 / 7mm double's.

In regards to "stopping" which was mentioned on one of the posts above, excepting Elephant, a 240gn 318 Bullet to the brain will stop a Buffalo and any other animal. The KEY is to hit it in the brain - or Spine - because hitting it anywhere else with anything else isn't going to stop it.

I've done it twice with a 338 and 250gns and their isn't much difference between a 318WR / 240gn and a 338 / 250gn when facing a charge ! you either brain it or don't.

OK, neither the 318 or 338WM have the "Shock" power, but unless you step up to a 500 and above, the others between the 2 calibre's don't either.

Give him a break, guys!

I absolutely love the misconception that the only decent DR is a dinosaur slayer. It leaves the equally elegant (and far more useful) medium and small calibers at depressed prices, affordable by mere mortals like me.

DandyofPunjab, I agree with you entirely. You should avoid anything smaller than .450NE. Should you have smaller doubles in your closet feel free to ship them to me for disposal.

Watch your Mouth please! I dont take that kind of language from Anyone! Thank you

.500 nitro

I agree if you place bullet right you can shot anything with .318 ivory hunters like James sutherland used it sucessfully on elephant but i like big bangers i am more comfortable with something above .375

Peter

I agree .318 is good enough for thin skinned game but if you want to shoot a buffalo its a diffrent story i will not be comfortable with .318 and as i mentioned and you know .375 is minimum legal caliber for hunting dangerous game in africa.

Curl

I dont carry misconseption of DR as dinosaur slayer,I agree smaller and medium double rifles are more elegant, but my problem is i am from India so anything i buy i will not be able to Import into my closet i would have to keep it in gun storage in London and then have it sent to africa whenever i go hunting.I am aware that this rifle will be excellent for plains game and thin skinned game but it is not my priority.

Best Regards
Harnihal

Harnihal

Thanks for the pictures. As you can guess not all of us are restricted to the rifles we can have and use. I can appreciate your wanting a large bore for DG hunting but the small doubles are loads of fun also.

What else do you have or are you looking for your first Mistress?

Someone's in the know.

Other hints are the trade label and engraving (from what little I can make out).

As for WRs I thought they stated that the 250/3000 required a "fairly stout" construction due to high pressures.

Mehul

Wannabe's see everyone as wannabe.

How many times have you hunted in africa?

How many double rifles do you own?

I can say alot of things on here aswell but my upbringing stops me from doing that.

I can PM you my Contact Info if you like to finish this MAN TO MAN!

.500 Nitro

I would like if you check with owner again this is price i got in email i got from him i can forward you the email if you want "The owner of the WR will sell for £12,000" and £12,000 comes to something like $19500.so please recheck again before posting.

Guys I just wanted to share pictures of a Nice rifle offered to me which i wasnt Interested myself (my own opinion) and i saw it was offered for a decent price,so i thought it would be nice to share pictures with fellow enthusiasts but if this is the way one gets treated this way here i would certainly not like to be part of this forum. Best of luck to everyone

Beautiful vintage double and, by the way, I believe the .318 doubles were regulated for the 250 gr bullet, not 240 grains as mentioned elsewhere in the thread. The only 'period' .318 loadings were 180 grains (not desirable) and 250 grains. A .318 with that 250 grain long bullet and great sectional density should be about the equivalent of a modern .338 Win Mag, only with about 10 times the sex appeal. It would certainly be adequate for anything in N. America and most things elsewhere. In addition to that, the cartridge itself is beautiful to behold - like a fine vase.

$19,5k USD is a very reasonable price for a first grade London sidelock .318 assuming very good condition. George Caswell had a .318 WR boxlock some time ago (may still have) that was listed at $16.5k.
