500 Jeffery at the range, finally
      #136914 - 08/06/09 07:42 AM

I finally took my 500 Jeffery out for it's first spin this weekend. Friday we just let a few off, I sighted it in today. No chronograph, that will be next time. 20 rounds from the bench, ouch lol. Actually no headache, maybe a bruise, we'll see tomorrow. Shooting got better as the morning went on, so that's a good sign lol. I'm sighted in dead on at 25 yards and about 2" high at 100 which is what I was aiming for. Beginning to get comfortable with the rifle. Loads are nowhere near full power (535g at ~ 2000 fps).

Here's a photo with my Leupold and rear sights on! My Lee Classic turret, drilled and tapped for the larger dies, which works great and way cheaper than a new press which I didn't have room for. Finally my "Maxi-Pad" for bench shooting. It's a Past shoulder recoil pad velcro'd onto a Limbsaver shoulder recoil pad ... That's my son's 73 Mustang Convertible / 351 Cleveland in the back which we restored together.

Regards all, it was a GOOD day ...

My suggestion would be to rig up a bit of a standing rest.

Far more comfortable and apart from a few shots required
from the sitting position to get the sights spot on,
the best and most confortable position to shoot such a big bore.

But well done anyway.

Thanks 500, I don't plan to do much shooting off of the bench besides load development and sight in. Other than that it will be either off hand, sitting or using shooting sticks. I do miss shooting with a sling though, I have half a mind to put a swivel in the forend even though I have a barrel band.

I do my load development using s standing rest (or sticks as you mentioned which would be just as good).

Why not use the barrel band and see if it really does affect the grouping before using it seriously ?

I'll try that, thanks. I think I'm going to get some shooting sticks though. I feel fine, but am sure I don't want to shoot full house loads from the bench. I figure I'm around 65 ft lbs of recoil with my current load of a 535g Woodleigh at 2100 fps. Full house loads (570g at 2300 fps) will be around 85 ft lbs.

Thanks again,

Chuck

Stuff 2300 fps, I found it hard to get up there
so left it at 2150 - 2200 fps.

In any case, animals don't seem to care !!!

Your shoulder probably thanks you too. If 2150 fps is good enough for the 500 NE, it should be good enough for me too.

I have a 500 Jeffrey, 505 Gibbs, a few 500 Nitro's,
and have shot a few bigger one's.

Going over 2200 fps really sucks for no real reason IMHO.

Yes, I agree with John. The standing rest made the recoil from my .450/.400 feel whimpy compared with the .338 from a bench. And, having felt no recoil at all when shooting a deer with the .400, I now wonder if I should have got something bigger for Africa - at least for the psychological load.

Cheers

Loads are nowhere near full power (535g at ~ 2000 fps.

Welcome in the club! The next step is the original load, 535grs FMJ at 2400 fps. Imo no problem with your big, heavy rifle.

Why not if you can shot it accurate? Today shooting at longer range on big game, 100 to 200 yards, is not rare.

I'm going back out tomorrrow and giving it a step up in power. 535g Woodleighs behind 95g H4895 and 570g Barnes TSX's behind 95g H4895. I measured my throat depth and I'm seating the TSX's out to the third groove (3.73" OAL) still leaving me .125" freebore. My dummy round at that length fed and extracted fine. I'm guessing the TSX's will be going about 2150 fps the 535g Woodleighs maybe 100 fps faster. The chronograph will tell the tale tomorrow unless I shoot it!

Chuck

My reload: Primer RWS5333 - Horneber case - 535gr FMJ Woodleigh - 127,4gr R904 - crimp . Velocity at the muzzle near 2400fps. Sometimes i use factory load's from Romey. There are about 132gr of powder inside, but i dont know what! Both load's shot accurate but in my 7 1/2 Ibs rifle the recoil is a little bit hard! Regards.

Shot all loads today both with and without a scope, all water jugs and water bottles DRT (Dead Right There) lol! Still have a ways to go. Chronographed all three loads, the 570g TSX's only got up to just over 2100 fps, going to switch to RL-15. I think shooting the 570g TSX's at 2300 fps should be a good all around load. Still no problem shooting from the bench with a scope, off hand recoil is not an issue at all. My two friends loved it!

I'll try and take some, unfortunately we're selling it. My son needs a car he can drive all year, already have a local buyer ... I'll take some more pictures though ...

Hi, I went out to the range yesterday to continue load development. For the first time I'm actually considering a lead sled. I shot five 3 shot groups using the Barnes 570g TSX with both H4895 (98 to 101 grains) and RL-15 (101 to 105 grains) ending at the recommended max for each in the Barnes Manual #4. Once I got close to the max (which showed no pressure signs at all) off of the bench. To say it was painful would be an understatement. I did not develop a flinch, but I could see it happening if I continued much longer (I shot 15 rounds from the bench (sitting), some (6 rounds) just over 2300 fps. The difference in recoil between a 570g bullet at 2100 fps and 2300 fps is striking. That coupled with the bench rest being too low which tended to focus the recoil high up on the shoulder/collar bone area made an impression. I have an ice bag on it now lol, pictures should it bruise up beautifully (which it did) will follow NOT.

I was shooting between 1.5" to just over 2" groups at 200 yards so accuracy was fine with all loads. I only have a 1.5 - 5x scope so a lot of the error was in sight picture as well as the shooter, the rifle is more accurate than me as is usually the case.

So folks, yes you were right of course, 2300 fps sucks lol. Shooting the 500 Jeffrey at relaxed 500 NE levels is fine (570g at 2100 fps), I'm sure off of sticks or offhand all of the loads I shot today would've been fine, but even though I intend to really limit any bench shooting, I want to be able to shoot a limited amount of rounds from the bench for load development and sight in without pain. I guess I've found my recoil tolerance level lol. So next time better posture (shoot more upright), and I purchased a Limbsaver slip on to go over my Decelerator XLT lol. I needed the extra LOP (at least that's what I keep telling myself). No lead sled yet ...

So my lovely 500 Jeffrey and I continue to get acquainted. I won't take her for granted so easily again, I was getting just a little too comfortable with her and she taught me a lesson .

Thanks all for all of your help, going to give the shoulder a couple of weeks to recover then back to the range with some reduced velocity cast lead loads for a change ... Some lessons you just have to learn the hard way

Chuck

Well finally made it back to the range, settled on the following load:

570g Barnes TSX, 93g H4895, Jamison Brass, Rem 9 1/2M primers, 3.73" OAL 2100 fps (500 NE speed)

Recoil is sweet with a lead sled with 10 lbs of sand bags, and absolutely no problem off hand. Three shot group all bullets cut the same hole from the lead sled. Now I just have to sight it in. Should be plenty for elk in two months ...

I also shot some reduced loads with 525g Cast Performance bullets and 55g of 5744 gave me 1660 fps. Great practice round but cleaning the rifle, ugly! Is it the lead bullets or the powder?

some pics

Thanks,

Chuck

Chuck that is a great pic but my eye was drawn to the grain layout between the bolt handle and the wrist and I hope it is a trick of the photo, but to me it apears to be short grained and running out the top of the wrist. That would concern me if I see what It looks like I see. Not trying to rain on your parrade so please dont take offence.

So far no problems with splitting, and no offense taken. I've reduced my loads with the 570g TSX from 2400 fps to 2100 fps. There's plenty of room at the tang, it's cross bolted and glass bedded so I'll keep my fingers crossed.
