On page 19 of Building Double Rifles On Shotgun Actions by W. Ellis Brown, he states that according to The standard directory of proof marks, that after 1950 East German shotguns were prooved at 32,000+PSI. In my studying of this directory I find that they were prooved at 14,507 PSI. I find that on page 92 of the directory. That is enough difference to get someone killed.

Am I missing something ,or have I just fail to add something up properly?

Jack

You have a very valid question. Might be best to get in touch with Mr. Brown and work out the details.

Thanks Baileybradshaw, I will do just that.

I'll let you know what he says.

I emailed Mr. Brown and here is his response,

Mr. Phillips,
You are apparently working out of the 1st Edition. You are correct in your assesment of the pressure. The 32,000+ PSI was a typo (should have been 12,000) and has been corrected in the 2nd Edition (the 2nd Edition states "13,000+psi").

I appologize for the confusion. When I had people edit the book, they mostly read for content, gramatical, and spelling errors, no one double checked my math, which as you have discovered, was a problem. Unfortunately, there is an error in the 2nd Edition as well. When I "cut and pasted" trying to correct errors from the 1st Edition, I created an error in the 2nd Edition that was not caught. It has to do with the calculation of the area of the head diameter of the rifle cartridge.

Once again I apologize for the confusion. Good luck with your projects!!

Regards,
W. Ellis Brown

32000psi in a shotgun hull, i wonder if some did try it out and never got around telling the story.

In the land of lawsuits, that must be a bomb waiting to happen.

Gladly there are observant people like you to correct the errors, lets hope that a lot of people sees it.

Here is another thread on this very subject from a few years ago, which may be of interest.
