Original .275 Rigby Markings.
      #136159 - 26/05/09 02:35 PM

I'm wondering how Rigby stamped their Mauser 98's for the .275(7x57) Round.

What and how was stamped on the barrel ? Does anyone have one ?

Was it .275 (RIGBY HIGH VELOCITY)or something different.

I've seen different ways, depending on the type or quality level of the gun and the year it was made / proofed.

Wasn't the stamping on the feciever ring, rather than on the barrel. I recall seeing an example with the reciever ring marked with Rigby and High Velocity. The caliber and adress being on the barrel. Stand to be corrected on that though.

aside from having engraved markings, rigby .275,s were also designated I AND II and this was done with a silver lettering on the bottom metal just ahead of the bullet release hole I was for standard velocity bullet weight 175 ,,II was for high velocity 140 grain bullet .
my rigby is sighted for the 175 grain bullet its marked with the I ,there are no other markings
outside of oberndorf on the side rail the ring has a V sideways and the serial number ,the barrel is not visibly marked with a caliber , above the woodline only is the rigby address. my 303. and 400/350 have stories to tell on the recievers !!.....paul

Excuse a non Mauser query in the Mauser section: What should be stamped on a Rigby double in 7x57R if it wasn't a recent rebuild?

I own a .275 Rigby and mine is a number 2 High Velocity. I don't have the gun in hand but I recall it has .275 Rigby, 140gr high velocity on the reciever ring with the Sackville address on the bbl. Interesting bit above about the number stamped on the bottom plate as mine has a silver number 1 engraved there. When I visited Paul Roberts I looked at the ledger book, found my rifle, and the number one on the bottom plate stood for (1 of 2 guns; ie; matched pair) as per Roberts. In the ledger my rifle is cross referenced with its pair (which is marked number 2 on the bottom plate). I don't believe the markings on the bottom plate stand for the type 1 or type 2 rifle. There was also a number 3 rifle that they built in the 30's which had a shorter bbl and stock. BTW- My .275 HV was owned by Lord Zetland, Secretary of State to India, sold in 1932.

Thats excellent and thank you for posting. May I prevail upon you to post a picture of the floorplate please.

That engraving is also very fine.

Here you go- here are a few interesting pics: first is the bottom plate with the number 1, a pic of the matching numbers near the bolt that match the Mauser number, and I also shot a few pics of the original Rigby ledger which logs rifle from 1932 (along with its mention of the mag plate having a number 1 on it).

Farkey, how did you obtain the ledger page? Was this service available when Paul Roberts owned the name?

Anyone here have a page which included #5394?

Thanks

Mark

Hi Mark,
I was in London on business and I stopped by J Roberts. They have a few of the original ledgers and I believe copies of most of them. the rest went to Rigby/California and have never been seen again. I have a couple Rigby's and was able to look them both up. Your 5394 is so close to mine; I'm sure that its in the ledger book that i looked at. I would contact Paul at J Roberts as they are very helpful.

Farkey,

I contacted Mr. Roberts when I acquired the gun, he was able to tell me the model, specefications, caliber, and year of manufacture. BUT, he was not able to tell me who it was made for nor provide scan of ledger, as he was "no longer Rigby's, and have only partial photo records".

Timing really is everything isn't it?
