A little dusty, a little light but for a poor student like me it should be happiness.

If I can find a decapper/sizer die as I ended up with a mismatch die set of 2 seaters and 2 expanders.

Pat

Perfect wood for a deer rifle My H&H gets hunted pretty hard but carefully and still ends up with dings every so often. Nice wood is oh so nice but I'm kind of glad this one doesn't have fantastic wood (cheaper and Less heartache when you ding it).

Nicely done and it is a great cartridge. Please keep us up to date on how your load development goes.

I'm waiting on a trimmer, and deciding what to do about the Decapper/Sizer die. I'll post tidbits as my experience progresses!

Thanks for looking

Pat,
Happy to see your 500 NE.

Who did you finally have re barrel your #1?

I have worked up some good loads for my 50 Alaskan.

Now if we can just get the cloning guys to get a huntable population of woolly mammoths:-)

Have a good evening.

Dave

Dave,
I was in the process of having Nonneman do it for me when I was approached with a rifle for a reasonable price. So I took that deal instead!

I was very pleased with the interactions I had with Nonneman so when I have another Ruger #1 done I'll be going to him. Very helpful and professional gent.

I don't want any part in gutting a woolly mammoth!!!!

Pat

Pat,
I agree Nonneman is very professional and easy to work with. I have a second #1 I am thinking about sending to him when the barrel needs replaced.

Looking forward to watching your load development as the 500NE is such a great round.

Yep gutting a woolly mammoth would be a chore, but the look on the meat packing plant managers face when you deliver it to be packed in a dump truck would be priceless:-)

Dave

Today Pat and I went to the range and had a fine shoot with his new .500NE Ruger. It was a great day, and I couldn't help but memorialize it with a short video clip:

Regan is a great guy.

I hunted with him in Limpopo in 07, you just reminded me to drop him a line.

If Curl tells you he can't shoot he's a flat out liar. He will out shoot you with his gun and then he'll out shoot you with your gun. But it's ok because he'll give you a beer or two after it is all over.

Great first 500 shoot on the ridge and I learned a balloon game.

I needed that before the rest of the day began.

Thanks Curl
Pat

Pat,

Congratulations on your excellent .500NE Ruger. You're going to enjoy that rifle. It seems to me all you lack is adequate time to spend with it.

Only question I have: Where's the other barrel? It only has one. I thought rifles come with two barrels! I tried to load it with two cartridges, and the second one wouldn't fit.

Ohhhh well I'm working on a Diamond for a Double. I don't know how well that will go but we'll see.

I'll add a little detail about yesterday's shoot. The primary objective was for Pat to have his first session with his Ruger #1 barreled to .500NE.

Since .500NE was the centerpiece, I naturally took my .500NE Merkel for the day. But I also thought we might enjoy shooting my .500BPE Purdey, so I took it along too.

Pat had his .45/70 Ruger #1, and we had a couple of .375 H&H rifles. The .45/70 got to play, but there wasn't time for the .375's.

Pat did a great job with his .500NE. The first objective was to find out where it shoots in relation to the sights. This was accomplished by shooting off sticks and from the bench. I'll say this: Bench work with a .500NE is somewhat less than pleasurable, but a nice "pussy pad" helps.

Then the "balloon game". This is no mystery at all. We hang balloons at 50 yards and shoot them (or shoot at them) offhand. That's a great way to get to know a hard kicking rifle like the .500NE. It's a hit-or-miss proposition. There's a certain feeling of accomplishment in annihilating balloons as they flutter in the breeze.

After our workout with the .500NE I introduced Pat and James to the "kinder and gentler" .500 - the Purdey .500BPE. We were shooting my standard Nitro-for-black load. I have owned that Purdey for about 6 years. During that time a number of my friends have shot it. With yesterday being no exception, I can say that everybody who shoots it reacts the same way. Two shots are fired, and the shooter turns around with a broad smile. It's so pleasant to shoot, and so accurate. We had a great time shooting the Purdey.

Then we shot assorted pistols. I had two Colt Woodsmans in my range bag and my M29 S&W. They all got warm. Pat had a Ruger Bisley model .45 that saw good use.

About this time Pat's cellphone got active. It seems he was committed to an afternoon with his fiance to shop for a diamond ring! The day's shoot gave him great inspiration. He said, "You know, this thing about a man buying an expensive ring for his love is great tradition. I'm looking forward to it. But in this modern time with women fully equal to men, I think it would be appropriate for the woman to express her love and commitment by presenting a nice double rifle to the man." He vowed and declared he would put that idea to his girl. James and I stood in awe of his genius. We'll see how it goes.

So we packed up, and Pat went off to shop for a diamond ring. What a day!

Curl

P.S. Pat's no slouch as a shooter, and James, the quiet one, is deadly.
