Remington goof up 30 AR ballistics???
      #135880 - 22/05/09 12:16 AM

The new Rem 30 AR cartridge, advertised to shoot at 125 grain bullet at 2800 fps making a nice deer rifle in the compact AR15 package rather than the larger AR10. Here is an article about the ballistics of the cartridge:

But on the REMINGTON WEBSITE, they are listing a 125 grain bullet at 2154 fps!!! Not even on par with a 7.62 x 39!

Hmmm. At 2800 fps I would consider the speed too fast for most 125 gr bullets to hold together on shots under 100 yards. If the magazine would hold them, I would prefer to load 150 gr bullets at 2500 fps. If the cartridge will make 2800 fps with a 125 gr bullet, it should make 2500 with a 150.

On the other hand, 2150 fps would limit shots on deer to about 100 yards. The ideal muzzle velocity for a 30 cal, 125 gr bullet would be about 2400 fps. The Nosler Ballistic Tip would retain 1000 ft lbs to 150 yards, and give some expansion to about 250 yards. Also, at this speed, the Ballistic Tip sighted in two inches high at 100 yards would be about two inches low at 200 yards. Other 125 gr bullets are too hard at these low speeds, or too blunt (30-30 bullets) to retain velocity at more than 100 yards.

Bullet construction might alter this some, but on the whole, I agree with you, and so did Ivan tho he wasn't of course interested in soft point bullets.

The ballistics of the Great 7.62x39 are described by this 125/2400 recipe, and I found it to be a superb killer of deer and dogs.

My Win. Match .30BR and my own .30/03(1.6" & '06 taper)ctg., both slightly smaller than the new .30 Rem case's capacity, I'm sure, will easily do 2,800 with 130gr. bullets and 2,540fps with 165's. For deer, I'd opt for a decent 150gr. or the 165 Sierra HP hunting bullet. 180gr. bullets will run 2,250fps.

Such as the loads above are in the smaller cases, I suspect handloads would improve on RP's ballistics somewhat, if the action allows. It would be a good ctg. for a bolt gun on a Mauser or shorter action.

Remington have used the 200 yd specs on their site - compare Accurate Shooters 200 yd data

125 gr core-lokt 2154 fps, 1288 ft-lb
125 gr accutip 2278 fps, 1440 ft-lb

dumb way to sell the cartridge/rifle

This compares well with 2800 fps muzzle velocity. If I was going to use a 125 gr bullet this fast on deer, I think it would have to be a Barnes X-bullet. A typical cup-and-core 125 gr bullet would go to pieces on a 50-yard shot.
