Mauser 404
      #135850 - 21/05/09 06:54 PM

Thought I could post a link to a few pictures of my big game rifle. An Oberndorf Type A Pattern #1 opened up to 404 Jeffery from the original 10.75x68 cartridge. I have added the extended eye relief scope after using the rifle with open sights on buffalo in the Australian Northern Territory. The rifle weighs out at 9lbs with scope on and 3 rounds in the magazine. Recoil with full power loads is stiff in the light rifle but shoots fine and drops buffalo in their tracks.

Not sure how to attach images direct but hope this link will work.

Always good to see the guns of other forum members especially when they have a bit of history and show it with the patina of use as yours does.. Most big bores will never see serious action like this.

Eagle27,

Don't you find the reduced FOV makes target acquisition slower and running shots very difficult?

Could you please tell me the scope model number, magnification and FOV at 100 yards.

I'd really like to know what you think of such a set up.

Thanks.

Rustam

Hi Rustam

The Leupold is an early model 2x20mm (2x magnification). The latest models I see are called FX-II 2x20mm. There is also a 4x28mm extended eye relief scope available from Leupold which I would like if using my 404 on longer range shots.

I don't know what the 100 yard FOV is, I have never gotten around to checking this. The idea of the EER scope is to shoot with both eyes open which gives you a full field of view with the aiming point superimposed on it. Originally I put the forward mount on the 404 for a single point sight (green dot) and while it was great for game shooting it was difficult to use for precision target shooting (developing loads etc for the 404).

With the mounting in low Weaver rings the sight picture is attained just as quick as open sights and is more like shotgun shooting. You do have to have both eyes open just as you should for shotgunning and you know how quick that form of shooting can be.

While I shot my buffalo with open sights (I had not mounted the scope at that time) I did miss not having a scope sight as I had always been used to on my other rifles so I would not hesitate to use this setup on the 404 all the time now.

I think for trying to thread a bullet through brush on animals the scope has a big advantage over open sights and will easily hold its own on running or charging shots.

Thanks MOG. What are you shooting? I suppose whatever it is there would have been one or two buffs in the sight picture at times?

Great place that Northern Territory, would love to return one day and have another hunt.

Hi Lindsay and many thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately, my left eye has become very dominant and I am unable to shoot with both eyes open or without an ocluder.

Regards.

G'day Lindsay,

I shoot a LH Win Mod 70 404, I bought it as a 404, but previously it was a 270! Its nice and light and shoots really well.

There have been a good number of Buff at the wrong end of the bead on that rifle. I am missing the NT at the moment but can not wait to get back shortly. Looks like you had a good trip up there too.

Regards,

MOG

Hi Rustum

Shame to hear of your eye deterioration.Obviously the little EER scope can be used with one eye shut as I tend to do when range (target) shooting. I do find I go cross eyed when concentrating hard on a target and that is why I got rid of the single point sight. Just about impossible to use on targets as the dot disappears when the focussing on the aiming mark for too long.

Can you use a peep sight?

Lindsay

Hi Lindsay,

The rifle does not have a peep sight and I'd rather not make any changes to it. However, I do have a way of mounting a scope which will still keep the rifle original and the only scope I have found with approximately the same amount of eye relief as your Leupold is a Burris 2.75x Scout. Unfortunately, the FOV at 100 yards is a mere 15'.

The eye-relief on the Burris 2.75x Scout is 8.5".

If you look at a bolt mounted aperture sight all you need is a replacement cocking piece to have the dovetail cut in and you can have your rifle origional simply by changing the cocking piece. advantages are balance is unchanged and neither is the weight. There are no driling of mounting holes for scope bases. This used to be quite common where an aperture was set up in tandem with the leaf sight.

This is on my 7x57 and I find it very accurate and think of it as at least a 200 yd accurate hunting sight.

This chap makes them as demand dictates and they are very well priced and beautifully made.

Hi Rustam

I will properly measure the eye relief and FOV on my Leupold just so you can have actual data to help you decide if an EER relief scope would give you enough FOV.

Thanks Lindsay but hold on for a bit as I am currently looking for a buyer for the rifle. If I should get one for the price I am looking at, I will replace it with something that isn't collectable and one that could be worked upon, if need be, without feeling guilty.

You've been a great help - first with the stock questions and now this. Thanks a bunch!

Rustam

Thats OK Rustam, glad to assist.

Just for the record my 2x Leupold is an EER handgun scope and has an 18" eye relief with 21ft FOV at 100yds.
