7x57 Optimum Barrel Length
      #135745 - 20/05/09 03:03 PM

After much angst, I have decided my next FN Mauser 98 project will be in 7x57. My Gunsmith will soon have a standard spec. 7x57 Reamer.

I will be trying to utilise 140 grain projectiles for light to medium game and wonder if there is an optimum barrel length to obtain velocity with this round. Handling a long barrel doesn't worry me. Is there a point of diminishing returns with this cartridge ?

24 or 25 inch according to Jack Millar.

IMO this is a tougher question than at first it might seem.

Yes, a 24 inch bbl will get you super velocity, but the answer really depends in my opinion on what you are planning to use the rifle for.

Here is a caliber that like the 6.5 Swede is truly useful and superb in barrels from 17 inches on up.

Where some cartridges might shovel lots of unburnt powder out the hole end if the barrel is too short, the 7x57 {and 6.5 Swede, .308 Win, .300 Savage, etc} are winners with stubby's too.

A 23.5" to 24" barrel will get you about 2,875fps to 2,940fps with 140gr. bullets in 98-type or modern actions. These are very flat shotoing loads and I've never had any problems with carrying a 24" barrel.

It depends what style of rifle you are building. For myself I built to the style of the 1920's - 30's english stalking rifle and then 25in just looks right but from 23in on will be more than enough for excellent performance.

I have two mint original M98 Peruvian barreled actions in 7x57, both have 29 inch barrels. So, it appears to me the Mauser Factory decided upon 29 inch barrels for their Military Rifles in 7x57 sold to Peru.

However, my hunting buddy has a 7x57 with a 24 inch barrel and it performs very well.

Go with what VonGruff says and you will be happy.
