Are there any books written about or does anyone have any experience with Mauser's built by August Schuler? I'm primarily concerned with the effects of opening up the standard lenght 98 actions for the 11.2 x 72 Schuler and the .500 Schuler. I've also seen his and other 98 actions opened up for the 404 jeffery. Any history of these 98 actions breaking?

sorry
there is nothing about schueler's work, harald wolf is maybe the most informed man about this gunmaker and his rifles. so you find something in different issue's of hatari times. whatever august schueler did, he was not bubba, thats sure

Could someone interpret 'he was not bubba' for me please. I assume it's 'he was not a fool/sloppy' ? Cheers.

I've never heared of actions breaking on the Shulers. There are a few on the market right now which look to have seen little use. Mine is about the most used of the guns I have seen - judging by wear and handling marks, etc. - and it cycles like a dream with no discernable issues at all.

There's a German Gun History Group whom you could contact.
Good luck and do let us know what you learn.

This is not to do with the magazine rifles but rather about his craftsmanship.
Several years ago I had the fortune to meet a great grand nephew of August Schuller. At the time he was preparing to go to Suhl for the installation of an exhibit of the riflemakers archives and offerings as a gunmaker. I was allowed to photograph several rifles and some drillings and some other pieces of his stock-sculpting. Here are a few of the photos I have available to me now. I have lots more on my drive at home.

That Springfield stockwork looks very Fred Adolph like. I didn't know Schuler did similar work.

I have an August Schuler in 7x64 Brenneke which is somewhat of an enigma. It was built in 1941 and patterned after the Mauser African Model of 1905 with a 3/4 length stock and finely engraved. Big difference between the 7x64 and the 11.2 x 72 Schuler/.500 Schuler so apologize that I have nothing to offer in that arena! However, I too have been trying to obtain additional information on the company. The only item I have tracked down at this point is a reproduction catalog available from the German Gun Collector's Assciation (catalog date is not listed) but it is a 32 page catalog and is offered for $22. I have not ordered but intend to soon so will offer up a review once in hand. Best of luck and please let us know if you run across something!
