500Nitro,
I already bought three of them. 1 for myself, my son and my wife for when were in the field all day. After I got them I saw what you have to do to clean them. Now it means I have to do 3 myself, because no one is going to help poor old Dad. Maybe if they got a case of the runs because they didn't clean their own they would help.

Now that's mean.

One site I saw had exactly what you said to do. So it obviously works. Camelback had a list of cleaning instructions to follow using their kits, tablets and tools.
It just seemed like a lot of work for a drink of water. But carrying 4 or 5 water bottles would be tough as well.

I agree with Eric - use Chlorine. You need to kill
as much of the stuff as possible.

Re your son's bladder, Depending on how old he is
I would get him to clean his own or at least help you.

I am of the old school / ex Military - learn to look
after your own gear and it will look after you.

If you don't start them young, you'll be cleaning his guns
until you die !!!

500Nitro,
My son is 15 years old. He helps, but does a half hearted job. He'll clean his own gun, but when he goes to watch TV I do it again. He'll clean his own camelback. But after he did it he would get poisoned. He's a little young to really make do the job as good as we would have done it. He helps and tries hard, he needs to age some more.

Apologise - I re read my post and it sounded a bit critical.

At least you are on the right track IMHO.

Good to see a kid getting out and about with a father.
So many kids only have female school teachers that they
have no male role models at school now.

No apology necessary, I will probably clean his guns and pick up after him until I die. But, hey that's what parents are for as long as we're not abused.
We've never gotten along as well as we have now that we started hunting together. This is a new thing for us. I had stopped hunting for many years to go fishing and he hates fishing. He wanted to hunt so we started it up again. Our relationship seems to be at it's best.
Ok time to get back on topic.
Remember we have to take care of our children they get to pick out our nursing home. LOL

I don't really understand the need to clean a Camelback bladder. Mine is the 'UnBottle' 3-litre in a blue nylon bag, which I carry inside my day-pack. Admittedly I've only been using it for a little over a year, but I never add anything to the water, and it never needs cleaning. Maybe that says more about the quality of Darwin water than Camelbacks in general!

I never needed to clean my old plastic army waterbottles either, for that matter! Just tipped them out for storage, and rinsed them with clean water before filling.

Me too. I have never had to clean mine out either, though also I have only used it for a year.

If I did clean it, it would probably be by flushing it with a weak solution of sulphuric acid (PMS - Potassium Meta Bi-sulphide) and then flushing it out well. Works to kill all germs and moulds in winemaking equipment so why not a camelback?

My question posted earlier was, isn't it a bother to clean?
The suggestions here are qreat. I think no matter what you do you need a little maintanence. Not doing anything could be at the least a prescription for diarrhea. Maybe something worse. Here's a very interesting site I came across when wondering whether or not to do any rigorous cleaning.
Ultimately we make our own decisions.

Marrakai and John,

I think the need to clean depends on where you are in the world, and what kind of water you store in the camelbak. Here in Norway, I don't have a problem obtaining clean water, and seldom do anything else than rinse my camelbak out with more yet clean water. But while in africa for a long period of time, I did make sure that water bottles etc were disinfected to some degree now and then. Better to be safe than sorry!
