Dog Memory.
      #132984 - 21/04/09 05:37 PM

This morning, I took my mixed pack for a walk through a couple of my neighbour's paddocks.

One of my Jack Russell terriers is a ten year old bitch that I've only recently recovered after she went missing over 6 years ago. (That's another story) In this particular paddock is one of the first fox-earths that I put her onto, as a young dog of 12-18 months. She bolted a fox in fine style and then ragged it comprehensively after I'd rolled it with the Browning. As they do.

To my memory, that is the only time that hs'e ever worked that particular den, yet when we were walking across the paddock, she left her habitual spot at my heels and made a beeline for that foxhole from nearly 100 yards away.

Surprising creatures, dogs.

What I find surprising is that your JR actually walks at your heel.

My previous GSP Siegfried had seen a hare, or some rabbits at one particular corner near home on three occasions. Even with windows up, he used to sit up and look around excitedly for game at that spot years later. Without any prompting.

Wherever I shoot a deer, 'like a dog returning to its vomit' I tend to check out the spot forever after, even if it is in lizard country. Obviously I'm no smarter than your dogs.

Have repeatedly seen "old trixie" a den bitch get out of a screen less covered dog box after pulling up in a paddock and head immediately to any den at all she had done before. If we pulled up facing in any direction it wouldnt matter and it seemed that she knew where she was at any time...amazing.
