In the market for a new .375
      #132852 - 20/04/09 03:11 PM

Alas, my old Winchester .375 H&H has finally come to the end of the road... its been turned into the girlfriend's new rifle (and a lot of time on my part to make it thus). She's 5'1" and I'm a bit taller, so we can't share:(

But, on the bright side, I get to buy a new one!

Just thought I would put it to you guys and see what ideas you had for a new rig, to be used in Africa on heavies: Elend, Buff (although I have a .470NE for that too), but also the bigger bears possibly in the near future:)

So, what would would you be looking at? Budget: 1-2K for the rifle, including claw mounts.

Cheers!

I know a lot of people hate these guns, but here goes: consider a Blaser R93. After owning and enjoying .375's in Sako, CZ/Brno and Weatherby persuasion, as well as owning and not enjoying one in a Rem700, I've found that this is the perfect gun for me. I've had the R93 for a few years, just got my hands on a .375 barrel for it (borrowed from a friend) and am already plotting and scheming how to make it mine. The rifle isn't a hard kicker, although it's certainly not heavy, and the quick takedown and repeatable scope mounts are just icing on the cake. It shoots as well as the Sako (which is very well) and much better than the others, and I haven't found a factory or handload that doesn't shoot well enough for hunting. It can be had with either a straight comb stock (mine is) or the Euro hogback style. It also comes in the synthetic (Professional?) version depending on your tastes and requirements. And I love that straight pull bolt.

John

John

LOL, sounds like my brother! He's totally in love with his Blaser R93, and mine (old). I have to admit, I tried it, gave it to him, took it back (as I thought I had not give it a fair shake), and after 2 years and ~150 rounds (shots "in anger"), I just could not get on with it. It was not in .375, but 7mmRM and .243.

On the other hand, have about 4-5 Remington 700's and absolutely love them! I didn't think you could get one in .375, was it a Custom Shop gun? Which variant? Do tell what you didn't like.

Thanks for chiming in though!

Too bad you're not in the States. I have a nice little pre-64 Model 70 in .375 H&H with a barrel shortened to 22" I have been offering to part with for $1600. Somebody wanted a gun to go after bear in a thicket, I suppose.

25" is too long a barrel for such a rifle, but with the integral ramp the barrel can't be cut down to 24" or 23", so I guess the option was to cut it off behind the ramp. When I bought it, I thought I might come upon a take-off factory barrel someday (stranger things have happened), but so far none has materialized.

Ruger M77 is a great choice. So is the Hawkeye African in .375 ruger if you want to save a little dough.
