Always been rather intrigued by these. Dont really need one but....
So if I were to get one built what are your suggestions for a "donor" action
Any info thoughts on this venerable (and now rather unfashionable) oldie

G'Day Fella's

I recently purchase a 404 from a mate.

It is based on a FN Browning Supreme magnum length, action (M98 type).
Its was built by Ross Waghorn for him in 1992 and Ross not only did all the stock work, he also did all the metal work, including barrel fitting, 1/4 rib, scope bases etc.

Price; I imagine I could sell it for $10,000.00 + US$? But I wont be!!!

I hope this has helped you with Action choice and final cost etc.

I want to build one on a Brno ZKK 602, I think that would be a great action to start with.

Minty man this is not in anyway a criticism of you,and you would have no way of being aware of the connection, however, regulars will know that I never use this site for retail sales.

For the sake of total transparency since this link has been posted, I would wish members to know that this is my company.

I am sorry if I have caused trouble in the forum, I was just trying to be helpful with my first post. It is a nice gun though.

I built mine on a FN Colombian 98 and while the mag length action is desirable it is not essential. I took half the extra length needed from the front and half from the back. 1 up and 3 down feed reliably EVERY TIME.

No problem sir,

I just don't advertise here, as to me this is a bit like chatting over the dinner table. My mum always told me no business at the dinner table. I am not the only gunmaker or retailer here, it is just I keep the two things seperate.
I just thought that I must make the position clear to readers.
Thank you for the kind words.

That 404 is just like my Thomas Bland Take Down 404.

Looks very nicely done.

500 Nitro

Thank you, from someone of your experience I take that as a fine compliment indeed.

I have an enquiry in hand for it and it may be getting a new home in SanFrancisco. That will give us reason to finish it up.
We don't have checkering done or the final stock finish until it is due to go out in case of accidents in testing or filing in the sights, the prospective owner has to decide on the origional 2150 fps load or the more modern hot load. You can see that the extractor is still in a protective coating that has to be polished off as is the bolt handle.
I'll take some pics for the forum before she goes.

Regards

If you want an everyday, workmanlike rifle, you can't go past a CZ550 Safari Magnum (not the Safari Classic). I converted my CZ in 375 H&H to 404J simply by rebarrelling and slightly opening the bolt face (or at least my gunsmith did!) He smoothed the action and ensured it fed reliably.
The original open sights were put on the new barrel. He did a superb job.
No fancy woodwork or fancy metalwork, just a gun that works, and works well.

That is one lovely rifle Bramble, but I fear a little too good for the likes of me!I'd be scared to scratch bugger!

I am in awe of people who can build such beautiful things. Speaking as someone who
was "cashiered" from woodwork etc at school and who is to any craft what Mike Tyson is to ballet
I am facinated by the skill of the smiths amateur and proffesional on this site and the things they can build.

DGR375 thats not a bad notion " No fancy woodwork or fancy metalwork, just a gun that works, and works well."' Thats what I am after, I have a couple of brno rifles and like them (Yes they need a wee spruce up etc etc but for the dough as workers they do the job) What barrell did you go for?

I'm having mine built on a Brno VZ24 M98 action with a 24" Walther barrel on the same lines as my WR425.
But first things first, Now pushing for my 458Win "Lighty" which is being built on a FN M98 and also in the lines of the WR.

1909 mintie Argie Mauser mit #3 Walther 25 inch barrel mit irons and integral square bridge mount system (and a somewhat dense stock). All up weight without scope and QD mounts abt 8lbs. Just the gig for sambhur, banteng and waterbuff with 300-350-400 Woodleighs as the maker intended.

amended weight: 8 1/2 lbs

I think your 9.3 x 62 is a tad heavier than my project anyway that's what "the feral" thinks.

I am having one build on a M-98 Mauser Oberndorf military action, I might see the gunsmith in a couple of days, and will try and get some pics up.
Brilliant caliber BTW, although I do not really need one, I always wanted one. (MY .450 Rigby and 9.3x64 covers all the bases, but my excuse was, I need a gun for clients to use...!)
