Dakoda M10, Browning 1885 or Searcy Single shot
      #132678 - 18/04/09 10:44 AM

G'Day Fella's,

I would like to build up a custom single shot in 257 Weatherby Magnum.
I would appreciate your experience based views and opinions on which of the three subject action models would be the Best to build the rifle around. I would like to use this rifle for both Alpine and Open Plains hunting of deer sized animal and to keep the total weight to 7 or 8 pound/3.5 Kg.

I only have limited experience with the Browning 1885--actually liked it quite a bit..what I did want to comment on however is what I feel is your "excellent" choice in caliber to built on...I have built 2 custom bolt actions in .257 Weatherby...have used it on deer, antelope, bear, elk, coyotes and an occasional prairie-dog...with the right bullet to withstand that velocity...it is one heck of a caliber..IMHO....

The Browning 1885 is a very nice action. It is pretty, well finished, small, strong, and well made. They have been used as the basis for custom rifles for over 100 years (though most were made by Winchester, I attribute the action to JM Browning, the man, not Browning the company). No doubt the others are nice actions too, and probably much fancier. My tastes are simple though; I would chose the elegant Browning over an extravagant action.

Have you considered the Blaser K95 ?

If the Browning referred to is the current production Miroku/Browning, then I'd prefer something not requiring 4 hands to take down and reassemble... Contrary to the original one.

G'Day Fella's

Thank you for your input and advice on this subject.
I can't help it John Moses Browning not only designed practical but an attractive, well shaped firearm. I'm a firm believer in Form Follows Function and Mr Browning excelled at both!
Yes, it would be a modern Miroku/Browning manufactured action.

Let me say, the Martini-Hagn is a very attractive and robust looking action but it does look a bit like the Searcy single shot. Are they one and the same?

The Blaser K05 and Merkel single shot (one & the same) are exceedingly nice firearms but I was particularly after a falling block action.

Any one have any experience with the Dakota M10? They look to be quite small and I assume lightweight?

I remember reading either an article or forum comment a long time ago from someone who used to work for Dakota which listed the faults of the action and trigger of the Model 10. If I can find it, I'll summarise or post a link. Essentially, I believe that the Hagn to be the best designed and best of all the falling blocks. I don't know if Searcy buys them for his rifles, but I heard a rumour that Holland and Holland will soon offer a single shot on this action and Hartmann and Weiss did/do (Hagn used to work for H&W I believe).

As to being fancy - of course they can be. However, if you buy the action, you can build as plain or fancy as you like. Its the quality of the machining that counts in my book and the Hagn is superb. Don't forget Hagn prices are in CAD too!

One post was on here - thefinegunmaker said

The only problems I have with the #10 are the firing pin design and lack of ejector. If the pins are not fit right they will break. I wouldn't trust the #10 on a trophy hunt like I would one of my Mausers. But for local deer/varmint hunting it's great. This is just my personal opinion, remember I no longer work there.

The other was a more in depth discussion of the Hagn v Dakota on another forum but I don't remember which.

The Searcy is not a Martini Hagn, Jabali is correct, Holland and Holland are currently making a single shot for a client on a Martini Hagn action, I saw it in the white 3 weeks ago. For details
of the action see the link below, best, Mike

G'Day Fella's

Again, Thank you for your input, experience knowledge on these falling blocks.
It's down to an as new Browning 1885 or Martini Hagn at this moment.

I now need to do more research on all parts concerned with this project.

If you have to choose between those, it's extremely simple - Martini Hagn wins hands down!

Martini hagn for a several of reasons. It's the top of the heap in quality and design, The company has an excellent reputation, the value will be much higher simply due to the action. Plus The M&H has the "not common" factor.

The M&H certainly is an excellent action.
Two things I think could be better are the block really sticks way up in the rear which squares out the lines of the action. And the lever/trigger guard I don't like - I prefer the lever to wrap around the trigger guard, not act as the trigger guard. I would like it better aesthetically if it looked more like a Farquharson lever.

They have a really nice one in 300 WinMag for about $9500US.

From a technical point of view, the Hagn action is the best falling block action ever designed. Sad but true. If I could afford it, there would be no question which one to buy. Just MHO of course.

G'Day Fella's

Sorry its been a while since I looked at this.

Thank You for your advice, in regard to my question.
The choice looks very one sided and I assume its the quality of the M&H, that is behind this.

Thank you again, your advice and opinions are very much appreciated.
