Vierling´s anyone?
      #132554 - 17/04/09 01:06 AM

Hi all

As some of you know, I am a fan of German made double and drillings. But, what about the more hidden and not so well know Vierling?

Anyone who have one and hunt with it?

How is it? I mean, balance, weight and so?
What calibers are they in?

I know lots of drillings was and are made in 9.3*74R and can be used all over the world, for close to all its games. It was done and still can be done.

But what about the 4 barrel brother? Was it used in Africa in the old day´s, just as the drilling?
I have never hear about it, but I hope some here maybe have.

Thanks for looking and helping me with all my odd questons

Cheers all, Vegard_dino

I've handled quite a few Vierlings and even a few funflings at Vintage Cup events over the years, but have never hunted with any of them. They are masterpieces of engineering and command prices far below what the quality of work would dictate, and well below the big bore double rifles.

I am not an expert with these guns, but am a big fan.

I'd like to have one in 20x20x.270x.22Hornet(or .22LR) with 25" barrels!

Hi and thanks for the reply

Funflings, wow, what calibers where they in? Heavy?

Yes, they are real masterpieces of work. I am also a big fan of them, and the drilling to.
Just as yousay, they are under priced, when thinking of a Double rifle and what prices they get today.

Have you ever seen some in a larger caliber for the rifle? 8-9 or 9.3?

Vegard,

Have you seen this? http://www.egun.de/market/item.php?id=2215594

You can form cases for the "Vierlingspatrone" from .22 Hornet cases, by first reducing the thickness of the rim from the front side in a lathe and then sizing in a 5.6X35R sizing die. Be sure to use .222" or .223" diameter bullets.

Hi

Thanks for the link and information on the vierlingspatrone. I did not know about it.
That is a nice vierling, show some sign of use, but thats ok.

Is the vierlingspatrone gone today? Or, can brass be found?

Thanks for helping

The "Vierlingspatrone", otherwise known as the 5.6X35R, is the same cartridge as the .22 WCF, a black powder cartridge which was the forerunner of the .22 Hornet. It is virtually identical to the Hornet, except that its rim is thinner, which means that .22 Hornet cases can be used to load it, provided the rims are turned down to allow the action to close. Another solution would simply to deepen the rim recess on the barrel to allow unaltered Hornet cases to be used.

I had a late friend who had 2 Vierlings.
First was quite old german (???) built in the expected and assumed normal chamberings of 16/16-8mm-22vierling. Its confiuration was as is the egun listing. The vierling in/or as the top rib.

The 2nd was a grand gun built for him (actually his wife had built for him as retirement present) by Scherling. This in all of its old world majesty was chambered very Americanly i.e. 12/12-.30'06 and 22hornet. On this one the 22H was over the rifle but under the gun barrels. Had a nicely done top rib with a claw mounted 4x Zeiss. Suprisingly light and lively.

I have wanted one ever since.

Yes, I know what you feel.
Did you shoot them?
Your friend, did he take them out hunting?

Thanks for the information

That's an interesting rifle, xausa. The single kersten or off-set crossbolt I can understand, not so sure about the sideclips set like that.
