What size Bronze Brush for .404 Jeffery?
      #132296 - 14/04/09 08:18 PM

G'Day Fella's

Thank you to all, for the informative responses you gave to my previous 404 question. Much appreciated.

This time I'm wondering, what size brush do you bloke's use to clean your 404's with???
.44 caliber rifle or is their a better option for the odd ball .404 Jeffery bore?

I use .450 for my 425WR and would imagine this size should be suitable.
Same go's for the Jag, of which I have found "Kleen-Bore" brand the best.

If you want to use a brush, I would say that .44 is too big. You should find plenty of .41 brushes which would be better. I personally never use a brush on my barrels. I don't let copper build up and find patches and suitable carbon and copper removers sufficient.

While we're at it, is a .410 shotgun bronze brush OK for a .450/.400? Not the same dia as the .404, I know, but they are related historically. Anyway, unable to find a .40 cal rifle brush, I got a .410 kit but find the bronze brush a fraction tighter than I expected.

I don't have a .410 shotgun brush but my other gun brushes are very thick/dense compared to a rifle brush. Try a .41 pistol brush. They are shorter and require less force to push through the bore. I'm sure Dewey make them. You could also try something like a .375 brush and single wrap a patch around it.

Have you ever tried "Wipeout"?
You don't need to scrub or brush the bore at all with this one.
It does a very good job, even on bores that are usually hard to get totally clean.
It can get a bit messy untill you get to know the easiest and best ways to use the stuff.

Nylon- "Tenex" or Iosso. .410,.44,.45, etc.
Easier on the bore and not sensitive to the solvents.

Ditto on the Wipe-Out (after Accelerator)

Thanks, JH, I did notice the wire strands seemed course compared with rifle brushes. What a bummer! Maybe I can just let some solvent eat the brush for a while (ha ha).

I haven't tried wipeout or carbout, but the Montana X-Treme products are very good. I use the copper cream to remove copper, but in reality it isn't needed very often.
Mostly I use Mercury/Quicksilver Power Tune as a powder/carbon remover.
I like Kroil for a bore oil.
And lighter fluid or iso-propanol to remove the oil before firing...

Thank You all, for your input and information.

I'll carefully measure up a SxS 410 ga that I have in storage for a customer, to see if a 410 brush might be a goer? Is "Wipeout", the De-Electroplating method of Lead and Copper fouling removal?

Wipe-out http://www.sharpshootr.com/wipeout.htm
This stuff does the same job http://www.mercurypartsexpress.com/us/power-tune-engine-cleaner-p18.html
These products are great too www.montanaxtreme.com/ especially the copper cream

G'Day Fella's,

As I suggested I would on 16/4/2009, I recently checked the Bore diameter on some 410 Bore shotguns, that I have on hand.
Whilst there were some variation from one manufacturer to another, all bores hover around 0.410" Diameter!
So if you use a .410 Bore Brush in a .404 Jeffery, it won't be scrubbing the groove diameter of the bore! I assume we would be better off using a .44 Rifle brush and if that is to tight to push and pull through the bore, use a .44 Pistol brush instead?

Do what I do, use a 458 brush, it soon wears down.

Brass brushes are a hell of a lot softer than steel,
what do you think wears ?????

.423 - .458 isn't that big a jump (0.035 only), considering
that the brushes are flexible.

Also, I often use plastic brushes when over size
just to limit any POSSIBLE wear and tear.

I would say a bullet, especially a Steel Jacketed Solid puts a lot more wear on a bore than a soft copper brush with plenty of lubricant (bore cleaner) on it.

G'Day .500 Nitro,

I'm not looking for a Verbal Stowch, I just don't like to see well engineered firearms damaged.

The problem with pushing oversize Bronze brushes through a smaller bore is that you can cause unnecessary wear or possibly, damage to some of the critical areas of a Rifled bore. By this I mean the Throat but in particular, the Crown of the barrel.
Can I suggest that you get a large caliber Bronze bore brush and squeeze it between your Trigger Finger and Thumb! The compressive strength of multiple strands of the Bronze wire in a brush is quite high and actually, not at all flexible! And if there is little or no Give in the wire of an over size brush, something else has to Give, and that just may be the Crown of your barrel!

Hence my original Question, "What size Bronze Brush for a .404 Jeffery"?

I measured a Dewey .44 caliber Pistol Bronze brush and it miked in at 0.480" Dia!
So I will do some additional Miking of other caliber brushes to see what may be a bit closer to 0.430". Maybe that's a .410 Bore brush???

Not sure what Brushes you use, but I don't use really thick one's, prefering one's with plenty of space between the bristles so that it does compress.

I don't believe brass / copper brushes will wear steel like that in my lifetime for the amount we use the guns.

I use 416 proshot brushes in the 404 or worn 45 cal as 500 nitro suggests
500 brushes in the 470
338 brushes in the 318 wr
worn 30 cal brushes in the 25.

I buy proshot brushes from the large US mail order companys in packs of 10 at about $1.50-2.00 each.
I treat them as a throw away item once they have served there purpose, not something to be treasured for a life time.
good shooting

Hommer

I made up a brush for my 404 from a spare 12G bronze brush by just screwing the head into a collar that fitted my 30cal cleaning rod and then trimming the bronze bristles with scissors (old ones) until I got a nice fit in the 404 bore. Works well and you can trim for whatever resistance fit you wish. Would obviously be simpler to do starting with a 44 or 45 cal brush that already fitted a rod under the bore size.

Cheers.

Glad you found a solution that works for you, but honestly I can't understand going to so much trouble when you can just use a jag and cotton patches with a mild abrasive (think toothpaste) like Montana X-treme 'copper cream', or a chemical copper killer like 'wipe-out' (foam or liquid type).

Agree totally, and I don't usually use or really need the bronze brush. Just made it up to give the bore a good scrub out after shooting cast bullets for a while. The bore in my Mauser is not perfectly smooth and shiney and the brush has quite dense soft bristles so gave it a clean out with Hoppes No 9.

As I don't normally shoot the big gun as much as smaller calibres it's always nice to hold and pamper it, dreaming of knocking over a few good tuskers in the day and then having to clean out after those pesky corrosive primers.

Ah isn't life so simple today.

In that case, forget about a brush, you need hot or boiling water.

Thankfully I was only dreaming so don't need the boiling water. I do have some original Kynoch factory ammo but is the later 2225fps (404J) stuff with non-corrosive berdan primers.
My precious tin of English made No 81 berdan primers for reloading the Kynoch cases are also non-mercuric, non-corrosive. Have plenty of experience though with the boiling water job on the old 303s.
