G'Day Fella's,

I can't help it, my personal and business Mantra is "Mediocrity Isn't An Option"!!!
So what may pass as acceptable to some, usually won't cut it with me as I prefer not to accept compromise when the very best, can be attained!

I don't apologies for trying to attain the very best result or outcome in most every thing that I get involved in. That's why I charge what I charge! I have been a Mechanical Fitter and Machinist, Welder (General Engineer), Designer (at least, two world wide Patents) etc etc, for 36 uninterrupted years and this has taught me a lot of things, including my mantra.

I have seen so many perfectly good firearms damaged and in some cases ruined, by people with there "Instant Fix" attitudes. So I would prefer not to join there ranks with my customers and my own firearms!
Hence my asking the Question- "What size Bronze Brush for .404 Jeffery?". It was my hope, that some other Nitro Expresser, may have the best solution or answer to my question?

Here endith my input!

Hommer

Mediocrity Isn't An Option for me either.

But sometimes you just need to sort out something
to be able to clean them.

I don't go stuffing just any old brush down $50,000 +
firearms.

Happened to look at the kynoch website today. They sell brushes and guess what...

So how does a .400 brush clean anything WELL above
about .411 and especially .416 and .423 ?

And what is the difference between using a Kynoch Brush
and cutting down a 12 Gauge brush to the correct bore size ?

And as someone else pointed out, even a .411 brush
can be tight in a 404, it just depends on the maker
of the brush as they all seem to be different width's
regardless of what is on the packet.

No idea - guess they are oversize. Simply pointing out that even Kynoch didn't have a specific .423 brush. All the more reason to avoid brushes altogether in my book
Quote:

Over the years we have found it impossible to get the correct size cleaning bronze BRUSHES and JAGS for the big bore rifles. As we like to keep our proof barrels clean and clear of fouling we have commissioned a small run of brushes jags in the following calibres. They will fit the standard Parker Hale yellow cleaning rod.
.375 to cover .375, .360, .380 calibres
.400 to cover .400 P, .404, .405, .450/.450, .416 and .425 calibres
.450 to cover .450 and .458 and .461 calibres
.475 to cover .465, .470 and .475 calibres
.500 to cover .500 NE, .500 BP, .505 Gibbs, .500 Jeffery, .577/500 calibres
.600 to cover .577 NE, .577 BP, .600 calibres
The jags are packed individually and are priced as follows for retail sales:
BRUSHES JAGS

.375 £4.20 N/A
.400 £4.20 £7.70
.450 £4.40 £7.70
.475 £5.00 £8.90
.500 £5.55 £8.90
.600 £6.60 £11.15
FULL SET JAGS OR BRUSHES £27.15 £38.10

CLEANING SPECIAL SET OF BRUSHES AND JAGS £56.00

They say they are .400, so I would suggest maybe undersize.

Anyway, a few of us has said how we do it, be it use a .41
brush or a cut down 12 Gauge Brush.

G'Day Fella's, OK, I'm Back!

I just noticed that www.brownells.com sell a series of "Rifle and Pistol Chamber Brushes". These are bronze brushes designed (as it says), to clean Rifle & Pistol chambers.
See page 253, of Catalog #61 for more details.

Call me Anal if you like but I just like to do it properly so, I was going to order some of these brushes to suit the> .40 S&W (Short & Weak) / 10mm Auto Chamber and see how they measure up for cleaning a .404 Jeffery?

I'll make a note of the results here, when I've Miked these brushes up.

If they don't measure up, at least my 10mm Glock will have a clean chamber!

G'Day Cinghiale, how was work today? All OK I hope???

Yes I have a dealers account with them. Not that it is to difficult to achieve.

Remind me when you drop around and I will give you an old catalog and tell you how to apply for a dealers acct and also, how to decipher the pricing for dealers discounts.

I hope these 10mm brushes, will do the trick?

G'Day Fella's,

I had a bit of a clean up in my workshop/store area and came across a couple of Dewey .40 cal/10mm handgun bore brushes (refugees form when we (Australians) were still trusted with handguns larger that .38 Cal). Any way I measured these up at 0.431" diameter.
That should be fine for loosening the carbon and other stuff in any .404 Jeffery?

I hope this may be of some assistance, to you other .404 users!

I bought such a brush the other day and haven't seen it since. Wish you could tell me where I could come across mine - unless you think it might be too big for a .411 groove dia.

The don't say they are .400" in diameter, they say that they are "size .400". I have a Parker Hale brush marked .30 caliber which would easily serve to clean a .410 shotgun. I expect the marking is for the intended use, not the dimension.

I get the 41 cal brushes in bulk from Sinclair International and they measure out at about .45 for a good firm fit in the 404. Mostly I use the nylon brush with a patch round it and never leave the cleaning till it is so bad it need lost of scrubbing. A patch with Hoppes for the initial carb-powder clean then Bore tech CU for the copper, finish with Hoppes and let it stand overnight. Never needed anything more severe than that, although as Eagle 27 says some times after a bit of cast bullet playing a bristle brush with hoppes is used.
