Old Musket found in Tree---Montana
      #131988 - 10/04/09 10:17 PM

Got this emailed to me a few days ago---made a few calls and allegedly it is legit...one person I spoke to saw it at a local motel where it is being displayed in a glass case...

Ripp

COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO, A LOCAL FOUND THIS ANCIENT MUZZLELOADER STUFFED IN A HOLLOW TREE ALONG THE YELLOWSTONE RIVER NEAR GLENDIVE, MONTANA. IT IS APPROX. 160 YEARS OLD. IN FANTASTIC CONDITION, PROBABLY DUE TO BEING COVERED WITH BEAR OR BUFFALO GREASE AND STUFFED IN A HOLLOW LOG! WOW! WHAT A FIND! SURE WOULD BE FUN TO KNOW ABOUT THE OWNER AND THE STORY OF THE GUN AND HOW IT CAME TO BE STASHED THERE AND NEVER RETRIEVED.

Wow! That is a great story and certainly very plausible. I wonder who the maker was? What war was being fought in that area 160 years ago? Someone probably placed it in there in hopes of returning, but circumstances prevented it.

RIPP:

Great story!!

Historical finds of this sort are always fascinating.

Outside Cody, Wyoming are some little museums that display various old guns found in parts of Wyoming. Really neat stuff and always great for mind-benders; how, why, what??

Der Jaeger, the story says 160 years ago, c.1850. But the gun looks like a Springfield {post-1863} to me, but I am no expert. Anyway, it could have been left anytime after being made...even "recently"!

Winding through my ranch is an old stage road that linked a number of logging camps and tiny "milltowns". Then, in the early '30's, the "new" highway was built, requiring several cuts. One is right in front of our house.

One day my son and a friend were playing in the dirt above the big stock pond and found a large knife. It is of a shape and design that are somewhat unique, being similar to a couple knives shown in Cole's classic book, but not identical. Of general "skinner" type, the handle portion was quite long. It appeared to be a mass production type of the late 1800's-early 1900's era which, of course, would fit in well with the settlement period here. It is possible that it was handmade. It's condition being "relic", it is somewhat hard to be sure.

Long story short, I made a duplicate, then wrote a piece for a knife magazine about it. Now the duplicate is part of our butchering equipment, so the "spawn" of the old one still works!

That rifle looks like an 1853 Enfield 3 band rifled musket to me.

Looks like a Kentucky long rifle to me. If you rerad the history on them, they came in all different shapes and sizes and were in wide distribution during that period of time.

You may be right.

Many were used by the North and South in our Civil War, and some knockoffs were made in the South during the war and issued to Southern troops IIRC.

Lots of Civil War hardware came West as issue equipment during the period of issue and as civilian guns acquired thru Gubmnt sale.

It is not a Ky Rifle.

Makes a guy want to start looking in all the old logs you come across, doesn't it?

The stock butt shape is English, not USA- in appearance, to me. Too, the butt plate & rear sight appears to be typically 1853 3 band Enfield.

I suspect crkennedy1 is joking - at least, I hope he is.

To me, it looks like a C.S. Richmond Rifle, or maybe the U.S. model 1855 three-band. My first guess is the C.S. Richmond.

Looks English to me too.
Wonder if they checked it for a load?

Yeah - I shoot an Enfield and have shot and worked up loads for other guys 2 band and 3 band Enfields and that one looks suspicusly identical to the 1853, 3 band. I would even be surprised if it is a civil war Confederate or Texan 'copy' but you never know.

You might also check the lock for a maker's mark.
