DG bullets for the 500 Jeffery
      #131895 - 09/04/09 11:45 AM

Hi all, I am definitely not trying to start a religioius war here, but of the folks that have real world experience with the Barnes 570g TSX, 570g Banded solids, and Woodleigh 600g softs and and solids on Alaskan Brown Bear and Cape Buffalo. What are your recommendations and why? DWG (Dangerous Water Jugs) and DWN (Dangerous Wet Newspapers) don't count lol.

I'm planning to load 535g Woodleigh soft points to 2150 fps just for the local game (deer, elk, and black bear), but eventually want to work up to a load for what the rifle is meant for. I plan to load the either 570g Barnes or 600g Woodleighs to around 2150 fps. I figure that should be more than enough on both ends.

Regards,

Chuck

Woodleigh's work great.

I did the / some testing on the first batch out of my 505 Gibbs. Sometimes I went "ouch" as it went off !!!

600gns is a lot of bullet.

They killed well, at least i thought so, a heap of Buffalo didn't !!!

Chuck, have you ever kicked around the idea of getting a custom bullet mold for your rifle? With velocities of 2150, weightweights, properly sized and lubed, should give your deer a dead stop, and I'm betting they'd be rigor mortis on big buffalo, too.

And if leading is an issue, a custom mold and a sizing die to allow bullets to be paper patched would eliminate that problem 100%.

Actually they do sell good cast bullets in 510. I plan to migrate to the 570g Barnes TSX's ans Banded Solids for DG. I do plan to shoot reduced loads with 5744 through the rifle as well. And I'm going to hold onto my 375 H&H dies, but I do have some Woodleigh 350g and Swift 250g bullets in 375. So as I mentioned a long time ago, they're yours if you want them 9.3x57. Send me a PM if you want them.

Chuck

Hi all, my converted 500 Jeffery came in today. Harlan sent my rear sight in a baggie, must be a problem with it, otherwise it looks awesome. So I need a rear sight put on and get some ammunition loaded as soon as my press is ready. It weighs 11lbs empty but the balance is much better so it actually feels lighter and points better ...

I've used 535 and 570 grain Woodleighs in both PP and RNSP on Water Buffalo. All were awesome, meter plus penetration and the bullets expand to .9 inch plus. They look bloody ridiculous when you cut them out.

Can heartily recommend them, and choose which you prefer. Even though the 535 PP penetrate heaps and kill well, technically these have a lower than desirable SD. To me this is theoretical crap as the bullet did a great job on the buffalo.

Having said that the 570 grain Woodleigh penetrated better but killing power appeared equal to the 535. Having said that the 535's made the reputation of the big Jeffrey. The newer bullets and new (modern) powders can lift the beast considerably, your choice which way to go, but you won't fail if you stick to tried and true ballistics. A 535 grain at 2300 - 2400 fps your in good shape for anything.

Woodleigh also shows a 570gn Hydrostatic which should stop a small tank....
