500 Jeffery Conversion
      #131518 - 05/04/09 01:55 PM

I sent my CZ Safari Classic in 375 H&H into Harlan at Triple River Gunsmithing (they do most of the CZ Custom Shop work) to have it rebarreled to 500 Jeffery in January, the 375 was lovely (accurate, reliable feeding/extraction, and gentle), but just didn't scratch my big bore itch. The good news is, the 500 Jeffery barrel is on and it should be back in my hands by the end of the month. Should be hell on elk, and black bear until I can afford to go after Alaskan browns and Cape Buffalo.

I'm having Harlan add a second mercury recoil reducer and replace the recoil pad with a Pachmayr XLT. The finished rifle should weigh just over 11 lbs without scope, mounts or sling. Here's the before image...

Regards,

Chuck

Chuck,
that .375 was about as good as it got in a CZ - followed your post on it.
I do understand your need for a real bruiser though and the 500 Jeff is a good choice.
Fill us in on what sights you are fitting , barrel length etc.
Looking forward to seeing it done.

Where are you shooting? I'm looking to get out with like minded gun owners around Denver.

A very good choice and a first choice for elefant hunting ! For buffalo's, a little bit too much power but no problem in the field, and you can shoot smaller game ( i shot a warthog ! ). I have a rifle of 7 1/2 Ibs, a barrel of 24" and use only the 535gr.FMJ bullet / 2400fps. Good hunt!

I kept the rifle basically the same, it started out as a basic CZ Safari Magnum (I added dual crossbolts, action job and mercury recoil reducer and barrel band), for about $1100. AHR added their CZ #1 kit (straighten and fill bolt, 3 pos M70 safety, and single stage trigger). It has an NECG masterpiece rear sight and a HI-Vis orange bead front. Harlan's putting on a McGowen 1 in 10" twist .500 Jeffery barrel, making it feed of course, adding a second mercury recoil reducer in the butt of the stock and putting on a Pachmayr XLT (thicker decelerator pad) recoil pad. All told it's still less than just ordering a 500 Jeffery from CZ, but it took a lot more time and patience. Mine should weigh about 11.25 lbs without scope, rings or sling, so it should kick a whole lot less than yours grandveneur!

Regards,

Chuck
