I've joined the .577 club.
      #129391 - 13/03/09 04:37 AM

I've taken possession of an A. Hartman & Co. top lever .577 2 3/4" BPE first brought to light by CptCurl a few weeks ago. A through inspection has revealed the damascus bbls to be safe to shoot. Here are two photos before my camera battery went dead. Field report to follow in weeks to come.

Congratulations. That's a fine looking rifle. Your second photo isn't displaying for some reason, though.

Hopefully you will post a good series of photos on the DR Photo Archive forum.

Keep us up to date with how it shoots.

Here it is, too many forward slashes. Nice rifle- way to go! Beauty. It looks like the firing pins might need attention.

The firing pins are free floating. There are no springs like most. CptCurl (Roscoe) sent me two primed cases in advance so that I could verify it fires before accepting it, no problems. My brother has dies he's selling me, Midway has cases and bullets, I have 4198 and foam wads - so I hope to have it sending lead downrange in about 1 month.

Bonanza:
A 577 BPE! What a great find. Looks like a rifle fit for a gentlemen. Are there any left in SC?
I used to live there. Seems half my life!
Look forward to your shooting report. When I buy a BPE, it will be a .577 or a .500. It will be a toss for me. I shoot a .50 in a combo gun. I will bring it after boar in a few weeks.
Looking forward to more news.

Before the era of cordite, the .577 express was the ultimate expression in a sporting rifle while the bore guns where for dangerous game; the .577 express where far and few between, while the .500 being more common. Today the .577 express is super rare. In a purely serendipitous manner - Cptcurl posted one link to this rifle. It was now or never if I ever was going to get a .577 express. It's a no name trade gun (Sears and Roebuck) so the price was right, but the quality it typical British. I owe Roscoe a Beer.

Bonanza,

Hartman and Co was the name of an illustrious British firm that existed in Calcutta until 1947 when the British left. Unlike Manton, Rodda and Daw which survived in name, the Hartman business died with the British Raj. If this is a Hartman from India, then you have a rifle with an amazing history and possibly more than a few tigers to its credit from the heyday of the British empire.

Beautiful rifle, most importantly, and congratulations! Hope to see some nice hunt pics in the future featuring your new acquisition!

Mehul,

This particular rifle does not look like it spent time in India. By it's condition I'd say it has less than 100 rounds shot. The hammers show virtually no striker divots and there is hardly and handling marks. I have a Hollis from India that has battle scars.

A belated congrats from Down Under as well, bonza.
You will have marvellous fun with that gun!
Top-lever hammer too, very nice.

Just don't let Daryl convince you it needs to be loaded with spherical ball.....

Bonanza,

Bring that beer when you come north to shoot your rifle here in western Virginia.

More photos please! I'd like to see the barrel flats for proofing.

You will love it. I'm glad it went to somebody on NE.com.

I was referring to the peaning of the anterior surface of the pins, Bonanza. It may not have been fired much, but looks as if it's been dry fired enough to pean the pins. Perhaps what I see is just crud.

Thanks for the pictures. Nice rifle - same Damascus pattern as the H. Whall ball and shot gun I used at rondy a few years ago in the smoothbore roundball events.

Bonanza - Very nice rifle , I saw this a while back , but no funds as normal , I have a T Bland 577 BPE under lever with steel barrels , I have been looking for a Top lever hammerless for a while , but a TLH would be good too , adding I think a little more speed if game hunting ,having said that my left barrel looks like it's unfired , the 577 kills em all with one shot ?

Congratulations!! In my opinion, the best of all the BPE loadings and pushing a bunch of the nitro's. If the Nitro guys ever realized what these rifles are capable of, prices would rise. Properly loaded, they are comfortably capable of laying out any game short of an elephant. A Classic.

Lovely rifle and great to have you amoung us. The winter 2005 "Double Gun Journal" has an article including working up a load for a similar rifle. They settled on 69 gr of 4198, dacron and a 600 gr bullet. My 3" Hollis uses a 610 gr bullet and 70 gr of 4198 and 17 gr of dacron. Where are you in SC? I'm down the road in Savannah if you're ever passing thru.
Best

I am hoping that you try various .577 BPE bullet weights, all lead, of course; not copper jacketed, as well as paper patched, as most .577 BPE bullets were, so we can learn what results you get with different bullets and charges you try. That rifle is pretty light weight, if I recall correctly, so it probably was regulated for the lighter weight BPE bullets. Hope, too, that you are using a chrono. to get velocity correct. Let us know what results you get, as we all love the .577.

DRJ,

I'll be duplicating CptCurl's Alexander Henry .577 try out load:

65.0 grains IMR4198
Three .375" 24 gauge felt wads
Montana Precision swagged 560 gr. paper patch RN
Jamison .577 3" brass trimmed to 2.75"

I'll go up one grain until it regulates.

CptCurl ended up with 74 gr. for a velocity of 1750 fps, 3808ft/lbs and 2521 OKW.

I've been practicing patching with some straight shanked .458 lead bullets. With patience and some experimenting they came out looking really good. An office paper cutter is essential.

Bonanza,

Maybe this lovely old girl never made it to India because she was meant to go with you on a big game hunt somewhere else. She has been waiting for a century for this. Aren't relationships made in heaven!

Wow, lovely.

Damascus barrels, c-scroll hammers and .577, all the glitter, sexy pantyhose and high heels in a same lady, will dump my small squirrel bores and start looking for the real lady indeed.

Got it to regulate today.

68 grains IMR4198
560 grain swagged paper patched bullet

Recoil is more than I expected but not unbearable.
