BRNO 602 action to re-bbl
      #128762 - 05/03/09 06:21 AM

I have a great BRNO 602 action with a fantastic piece of aftermarket wood stock. It is in the orginal .375 HH now and I want to go to something bigger.

The largest I own now in a BRNO is a .416 Rigby so I wanted something larger. .458 Lott - .505 Gibbs -- 510 A-Square - 450 Ackley???...

What are your suggestions?

I was thinking of say a 500 A -Square?? or similar.

Do any of you know what the bore of the .375 HH BRNO bbl can be re-bored into? I was thinking of possibly keeping the existing profile and doing the re-bore.

What about suggestions of the make of bbl -- any thoughts on which is a better brand for the larger bores?

thank you for any thoughts.

Farshot:
Without having to work the bolt face and rails over a bit, the easiest rebarrelings will be off your current .532 case head/.513 base -- such as 450 Ackley, 450 Canadian,458 Lott, 470 Capstick or 475 Ackley, etc.

As to reboring, depends on the barrel diameter, metallurgy, etc; had Labounty rebore for me in the past with great results, Cliff retired and sold to Clearwater. (deltagunshop.com)

Or ,try Randy's, Redman's or Classic(though , I have not personally used them, but I have seen good work from all three )

If you wish to open the bolt face, widen and reshape the rails, fiddle with the magazine and perhaps open the action itself up a bit you have numerous other choices off several parent cases.

All depends on how much time and money you wish to consume.

Thats great info so far - good thoughts about the bolt face

As for the names of gunsmiths who re-bore, while I appreciate it, I live in Canada and sending a bbl to the States and back is pretty difficult so it would need to be done up here by the one or 2 guys that still do it.

I have a 602 which is being converted to .500 Jeffery at this moment. I am more than a little concerned with the question of feeding, but I am expecting to be notified that the job is done any day now and as soon as I have the rifle in hand, I will be glad to furnish you with an evaluation of the conversion.

Another consideration is the expense of componants. The .458 Lott, Watts, Ackley, etc. are all cases based on the .375 H&H, and the brass is FAR cheaper than any of the more exotic British rounds. It is also far more available. Taking the case one step up to .460 Weatherby/.416 Rigby size is another possibility. Either of those cases opened up to .500 will produce velocities which will easily outperform .500 Jeffery or .505 Gibbs factory loads. The brass is more expensive than the H&H size, but still easily available and inexpensive compared to .505 Gibbs or .500 Jeffery brass.

These guys did mine for the previous owner, Brno ZKK 602, was a 375 H&H, now a rebored 416 Rigby. They also did my Model 70 458 Lott, that I traded for the 416 Brno:

Give them a call.

Try Pac-Nor barrels. They have been doing a great job for me over the past 15 years and their work is perfect. I would not bother with a re-bore? What for? Sell the barrel to someone who wants the caliber that it is chambered for. Just my opinion.

xausa, I own a Brno 602 action which has been converted to 500 Jeffrey. It took my gunsmith 3 goes at getting the feed just so. Now it just plain works from a staggered column. Mine holds 4 down plus 1. Not bad for those big fat cartridges.

Don't be despondent should the thing not be perfect first up, they normally feed quite well with some work. Once their done their done forever.
