Spring has sprung--red mist on the snow..
      #128504 - 02/03/09 09:11 AM

Wondering if anyone else is getting the recent warm weather in snow country which has brought out the gophers in mass numbers...

My son and I went to the range today to sight in a new Anshutz 17MHR..took the long way home--it is 51F today--which is unusually warm for this time of year here..were able to smack almost 2 dozen gophers out on the snow and in the melting fields...

the 17HMR with shots 150 yards or less..leaves a very dramatic red mist on the snow as it smacks the gophers..really an amazing little caliber..one of my favorite spring time activities...

Ripp,

Sounds like you two had a grand time!!! I've never shot a .17HMR but it sounds like a cool little round. I spent a little bit of time with a friend shooting Prairie Dogs in Wyoming last Fall with a .17 Remington, and that thing just SMOKED them!

We love the .17HMR's - Len uses a particularly accurate Marlin and I a Martini Cadet that I re-barreled and chambered up. We use the HMR's to 200yards, stretching to 240yards at one ranch close to the house, just to keep the noise down a bit. At 200, you can make head or chest shots routinely on our Columbia Ground Squirrels. I have a 6.5X-20Xx44 Simmons Mildot on mine while Len uses a 6x-24x X 40 M4200 Bushnel mildot on his.
We use the .17 centrefires for long range shooting, to 450yards - his a .17AckBee I chambered up and mounted on his Sako, while I use a re-barreled .22 Hornet in .17 Ackley Hornet. Nice having both reamers.

Unfortunately, our Columbia Ground Squirrels (gophers) don't come out until the end of April. Also, the little buggers go back down by the 24th of August. They are the biggest 'gopher' of all, but are out and about the shortest time frame of all the different varieties. Around here, they'd have to burrow up through 5' of snow to see the sun.

Just loading up the last 300 cases for my .17AH's now, to be ready for Spring. 2,000 rounds total ready. 25gr. Vmax Moly @ 3,640fps. My other load is 20gr. Vmax at 3,925fps. Len is driving 20gr. Vmax at 4,100fps from his .17AB. for walkarond guns this year, we're going to use our flintlock longrifles, just for a change, mine a .40 and Len's a .54. I guess the .54 will kill 'em if you hit them right. Nothing but chunks and spray.

The 17 is very effective..rimfire or centerfire..also have a .17 Remington centerfire which as stated really smokes ...

Attached a poor quality photo below of what the 17HMR does to gophers--sorry for the quality but you get the idea..

There used to be a head there....

Daryl,

You made me laugh out loud...my wife asked what was so funny...her comments were "YUKE"..

That is a classic...

Have to save that one to my photo section...

Thank you

Good shooting guys, looks like a ton of fun. We are still ice fishing in Vermont. I'll get to tap the trees next weekend. Nothing much to shoot at right now.

We don't have rats till later. Same Columbia's as Daryl's, except they have a Southern twang when they go "Peep". Kinda like "Pee-yup"...

Perhaps the word "happy" in terms that you have those varmints isnt right but it sure sound fun.
Here the only thing i come across are the feathered varmints, and they are a bit hard to get, and when you get one, they dont show up at that spot until a year later.

Its a really poor quality photo from the camera on my cell phone of a gopher in the hills about 20 miles west of my house..they were out in large numbers on Sunday as temps here were in the lower 50'sF..hit with a 17HMR ...

we have columbians as well out in the farm fields plus going northeast or east of where I live we have the jumbo Prairie-dogs...which I am sure you are familiar with..not sure their actually weight but a big old mail as to be in several pound range...makes for spectacular twists and twirls when hit with a 50 Hornady at about 4000fps our of a 220 Swift..

"Black Tailed Prarie Dog is their moniker. None here.

All species of ground squirrels including the PD,are quite canibalistic. The injestion of meat (each other) kicks the females back into estrus almost immediatly so they reproduce again.
Rock Chucks, ground hogs and all species of marmots are strickly vegetarian.

Daryl,

Rock chucks are almost more fun, IMO, than p-dogs---they are huge--have been using a .243 with 70gr ballistic tips..really slaps'em....

Stopped at Bozeman on the way home from Ontario, a few years back. Went rock-chuck blasting with a friend I met at Jim Saubier's small bore forum.

Doug let me use his Rem 700, with a NacNor Tac .20 barrel, the rifle Smith'd by Greg Tannel. I fired off 64 rounds using 32gr. (the first 20cal made by Hornady were 32gr., the later ones 33gr.) at 4,200fps muzzle velocity. The first 3 chucks were to get used to the trigger and sights so he graciously "allowed" let me shoot at some close range - 210yards on the Leica - 1 head shot on the adult, 2 neck shots on the pups.

He then moved the truck9shooting off the hood - bipod with no rear bag and the shooting began in earnest, along a fence row & beyond. Doug wouldn't shoot for a while and ordered me to carry on when I asked about him shooting. The closest chucks were 404yards and the farthest were 440yards. I had to hold between 6" to 9" high and about 4" to 8" into the wind depending on the angle. It was pretty easy, actually, with the 6-24X scope. I missed 8 rock-chucks which needed a second shot to splatter. Oh well, maybe with more practise? I guess I can be happy with 87.5% at those ranges.

Spring has sprung--red mist on the snow.. [Re: mikeh416Rigby]

What beautiful day today. Light clouds in a beautiful blue sky and virtually no wind today. It's 45 degrees right now. Very nice.

I have been having knee problems for a couple of year and had total knee replacement surgery February 2 so I haven't been getting out like ai normally would. I got up this morning with no physical therapy on the agenda.

I was feeling pretty good except for my back which has been bothering me for a couple of days. Decided to ignore it and get on with it. I hung a new flourescent light in the laundry room for the wife. Then since some people seem to be unable to go down 2nd AV SW and find number 226 even though the numbers are over the door, I decided to put up my old Double D Gopher Ranch gate sign on the front fence, so people can find the place. Hope they can see that!

This knee deal has kept me physically inactive since just after deer season. I could not believe how tired I was after this little bit of home improvement activity. So while I relaxed a bit the wife fixed lunch.

After lunch we drove north to the gopher fields. The wind was blowing a bit so it was cool. I started with a run of 5--5 straight shots, five straight hits. Then I had another 5 run--5 straight shots, 5 straight misses. Well I was using my 17 Hornday Mach 2 in my Martini and that little 17 grain bullet is so wind sensitive, and I'm sure the wind came up, yes that's it the wind came up.

I am not allowed to drive right now so the wife was driving. She drove to fast, hit every gopher hole and always lined the gophers up on her side of the truck. When I brought this to here attention, she told me that she was only doing it the way I did it when I drove. So not true!

We came to a flooded section of the two track and I told her to drive below it where it was dry. She drove above it on the side hill where I could see the grass was soaked. Half way through, the rear of the truck started sliding down hill to the left. She punched the gas and cranked the wheel hard right. That instantly threw up a rooster tail of mud and the truck snapped 90 degrees to our line of travel. She stopped and then punched it again. I firmly but quietly said STOP! and ask what in the heck did she think was doing. She said getting out of the mud. I told her we weren't bogged, we just didn't have traction and I told her to roll down the hill backwards and off the wet grass.

After she did that she said "gee that was fun." I reminded her that she would get very upset when I did this sort of the thing...She laughed and said its so different when you are behind wheel.

We spent another hour or so driving around and poked a few more gophers. The dogs got out and ran around a bit but they didn't seem to catch on that we were hunting. They still seemed to enjoy themselves getting out and running.

On the way out we bumped 4 big fat Mulie does. We found that interesting. In the 12 years we have hunted this ranch we have never ever seen a deer, ever.

Further down the road we saw a big golden eagle sitting on a power pole. We stopped and looked at it from perhaps 30 yards and it was not the least concerned. What a big bird! We drove on down the road and another golden eagle flew up out of the field. As we watched, it almost flew into our windshield.

Little further down we saw what we thought was a fox out in a field. It stopped and hunkered down as we got closer...we saw that it was a coyote that had already shed its winter coat all except for its tail. It was a lucky coyote as we had already put the guns away.

As you can see despite all my whining and moaning from being laid up with a healing knee, the wife and I still had a great spring day in Montana!!!

Gophers May 2009 - inclement weather, snow, hail, rain kept us from shooting for a couple days, and also kept the little buggers underground. We did manage a few days of shooting though. Len points out a silouetted gopher so I made an attempt to photo him showing windage at the rifle and elevation for a 245yard shot. Rifle's in one pic are my .17Ah and .17HMR.

I managed a bragging 174yard offhand shot on a gopher using my .17HMR in another location along with a number of ofhand shots around 120 yards, along with a 244 yard shot(resting ona fence post with the same rifle. Not bad for a rimfire, Eh. I don't think I pounded more than 600-700 gophers this trip for the 3 days of shooting we had, but had a good time when it wasn't snowing, hailing or raining. In counting up my empties, AH's cases as well as empty 17HMR boxes, the above numbers are about right. This trip usually sees around 1,500 gophers biting the dust - grass or snow.
Spotting

Hummer Action

HMR and AH clearing them out.

Len says, there's one.

Silhouetted - safe from the rifle - cows and llama's in the back field beyond the gopher.
