Danzig Sporter Information (Pics)???
      #128465 - 01/03/09 11:52 PM

I am looking for some information on a gun I have. The caliber is 8x57. It says " Gewehrfabrik Danzig" on the receiver left wall along with a 3 digit serial number. There is also a proof mark on the left of the serial number.

Did the German arsenal Danzig make any sporters or did they make only military rifles ?, If Danzig did not make sporters, who could have made this rifle.

It has a 3 digit 9xx serial number, is it possible to get an idea when it was made?

Thanks
Herb

"A large number if Model 98 Mauser rifles on hand in Germany after World War I were converted into sporters and caliber 8.15X46R target rifles. The quality of these rifles ranged from fairly good to poor....Some imported into the United States were called Danzig rifles because they were made at Danzig Arsenal. Military markings were removed from many of these rifles which caused problems with identification."

Ludwig Olsen "Mauser Bolt Rifles" p. 292

I have a similar rifle in 9X57 made in the Erfurt Arsenal. Unfortunately, when I obtained it the sporter stock had been replaced by a very poor quality military stock conversion.

I am of the opinion that the Danzig arsenal did produce sporters. I have seen a number of them and they all pretty much look the same except for different calibers. All have reinforced stocks with schnable forends and similar round pistol grips along with stepped military contour barrels. The set triggers and serial number range indicate non-military production as well. All marked "Gewehrfabrik Danzig". Nice looking rifle.

I know this is a zombie thread, but Herb mentioned his rifle on another forum where the idea of starting an informal database on these rifles was raised.

From the dozen and a half examples to date(including my own), the highest serial number is in the 6500 neighborhood.

Would anyone else have one of these tucked away?

Quick & dirty of my three-digit, temporarily fitted with a reproduction 20 round trench magazine prior to taking it out to the range for a function check.

Years back I had one of these. Serial number 709.
Was a 8x57 that had the full on "American-ization" sportizing done to it.
Weaver bases, low bolt and safe, set trigger removed and a Jeager installed, recoil pad.
I straightened it up some, leather covered pad, rebarreled to 275 Rigby H.V.
Fun gun that I foolishly sold.

Well now I know how to pronounce the name on my rifle. I have one but its a small ring 98 same stock shape without the barrel wegde. I picked mine up to make a 35W the smith said that it was to small so I went with the 7/57. Mine had a Johnson rifle barrel in 3006 on it it was so rusted in the bore that I couldn't see through it thats why the 7/57 (pac-nor) with the same taper as the johnson barrel without the step in the barrel.
