Black Leopard "Panther" Any Shot Lately ?
      #128438 - 01/03/09 03:30 PM

Has any one heard of or seen any Black Leopards or "Panthers" shot in the last few years ?
I have only read & seen photos of them from the 60's may be early 70's ,non from then on , may be all the countries they were more common in are closed to hunting now ?

I saw one in the Selous about 15 years ago or so and hear there are some seen from time to time in the Kruger Park but haven't heard of any being shot for some years anywhere.

How strange! In Australia it seems people see them quite often. I haven't seen any spread over the bonnet of a Toyota, though (ha ha).

2 years when discutting with Rich Eliott, he was affirmative that black panthers aren't this rare in Ethiopia and that it'd be a good idea to buy a leopard permit as such opportunity doesn't land twice when hunting.

I would think a location in Victoria and the Dividing Range near Sydney are the hottest locations for "black panthers"!

Funny, none are ever just spotted!

I think Capstick mentioned in a book, for what it is worth, that he thought Jaguars were more common as black than leopards.

Also just a guess wouldn't they be more genetically likely in heavier forest/jungle regions than more open savannah/bush?

They're spotted in Florida every so often, as well as in Mexico and into the Panama areas.

Even in NZ here there have been sightings of large black panther like animals on occasion but of course having never had cats other than the domestic variety in this country, these could only be large feral versions of the pet moggies.

Something I have always meant to ask since reading Jim Corbett's books on hunting in India, is a Panther just a colouration in the Leopard species ie a black Leopard? If so, where did they get the name Panther from?

Common names can always be a problem as can he lumpers and splitters thing, but I believe the black version of the leopard as is found in Africa and India is simply a melanistic version of the ordinary leopard, the scientific name of which is Panthera Pardus. The name panther is a misnomer taken from the scientific name and used more commonly in India than Africa.

Im not sure what the story is with the south American version but from what pictures I've seen, they appear to be more heavily built that the African and Indian version. - I don't even know if the same one spreads into north America or not.

South American jaguar is Panthera onca. Melanistic forms are common in some areas. More info here.

I was offered to hunt jaguar. The problem is that I know of no way to have the hide entering in France.
It seems that jaguar is a scourge in some areas in Brazil and that lots of peones (farmers) will help any hunter to get rid of cattle raiders. Officially hunting jaguar is illegal but not enforced.
