.303 for sambar?
      #12804 - 30/03/04 03:33 PM

How well did the 215 gn loading for the .303 perform on sambar?

Yes, I know one can kill such large deer with a .22 Hornet, but I'm not worried about a perfect lung shot. How well do the 215 gn bullets perform if the aim is a bit off and the shoulder is hit. Will the bullet's large SD allow it to get inside reliably? Or is this just not enough mass to do the job properly?

Any suggestions as to minimum bore, SD, fps, or bullet weight?

Karl

A lot of sambar have been shot with the 303 over the years.
I used a martini 303 loaded with 215 gn woodleigh's last year in the NT with brilliant results.
Half grown buff one shot kill.
Front on shot on pig also cleaned up its mate standing behind it..
Woodleigh gave me a load which is as follows:-
303 win brass,fed primer,39gns 2208,215 gn woodleigh projectile,overall length 3.05 ins
I have shot a lot of scrub cattle over the years with a 303 and seldom ever had to deliver a finishing shot.
