NightForce NXS or Swarovski Z6i
      #127994 - 25/02/09 09:04 AM

Does anyone happen to know if the NP-2DD reticle for the NightForce 3.5-15x50NXS is illuminated?
Thanks. Am considering this or the Swarovski Z6i 2.5-12x50
Neither is cheap but I need better low light performance than I am getting currently but don't want to go to a 56mm.
Any thoughts on the NXS or Z6?

Not sure which one has the best light--but as to durability, based on what I have seen, witnessed and heard..feel the Nightforce is built the sturdiest...

Thanks guys. Received an email from Nightforce stating that every one of their scopes is illuminated. Just need to decide now... upside of the Nightforce is the magnification range with the 50mm objective, something you can only get with Swarovski by jumping to 56mm. Downside is the size of the turrets although the illumination system on the Swarovski Z6 is not great aesthetically...

I will defintely take only a Swarovski on any of my guns anymore!!! They are opticaly and mechanicaly perfext! -> I have 3 Swaro´s in use of my own...

If You want higher magnifition on the Z6i - wait a moment, the 3-18x50 is coming soon with BTurrent... (available from July)

Yes I was going to post that yesterday but didn't get to it.

Have a look at their reticles. They are not the usual reticle.

What about a Schmidt & Bender?

Don't know if it's too late...

I've got a S&B Zenith illuminated. Great scope.

And I've got a Swarovski Z6i... A step higher on the ladder, no questions about it. A 1-6x24 with Center Dot reticle, it's a true 1 at the lowest magnification. You can aim with both eyes opened, and the center dot just jumps on the target... Fastest scope I've ever used. As far as optics are concerned, they are just up there at the top with a very few other makers.

My next scope? A Swarovski again.

Now, if anyone wants a like-new Schmidt & Bender Zenith 1.5-6x42, illuminated reticle, send me a PM. As I said above, it's a great scope.

If it is light gathering you are after then i would buy the Swaro the glass in those scopes is second only to maybe S&B or B&L .
I have 2 nightforce scopes and use them for long range huntng, they ae great because they are so dam tuff and their turrets are easy to use for dialing in long range drops and windage. Yes evryone of them comes with the illuminated recticle and they do wrk very well in low light just not as well as the swaro , which i have also used.

I thought that all the German scopes mentioned used Schott manufactured glass therefore any differences in performance might be put down to the lens grinding and finishing.

It certainly comes down to lense finishing and final coatings.

But the type and quality of glass must be set as the definitive parameter. Without that little can be achieved.

Well I had a look at the Nightforce 1-4x at the Melbourne SHOT Show and will probably be buying one to give it a try.

Not sure which rifle yet, my .375 M98, .30-06 M98 or maybe the Tikka U/O in 9.3x74R or even a combo 12g/7x65R barrel.

Having 30 mm tubes will mean I need to source new rings.

I'll be getting the 2.5-10 next great light weight mountain scope.

I like light-weight scopes too, and for that reason was considering the Nightforce 2.5-10x24. But it weighs 17 oz. The heaviest Leupold I own is the 2.5-8x VX-III at 12 oz, and the 2-7x28 UL weighs 8 oz. There are other good reasons for considering the Nightforce scope, but for my light-weight rifles I think I'll stick with Leupold.

agreed but for the long range dialing of a target their turrets are the best on a light scope. That's why I want 1.

I finally took the Swarovski 2-12x50 in the end with the 4A-300 illuminated reticle for my deer rifle. Decided 2-12x was more than enough for the broken arable/woodland I mostly shoot over with that rifle and didn't want the bother of parallax correction when it comes to quick shot opportunities in woodland. Very pleased with it although I haven't shot it yet because the rifle is away having a Quicksilver titanium alloy sound moderator fitted (something I have resisted till now as the others on the market have been (a) huge and (b) damn heavy!). Thought I'd spruce up the old girl for her 15th birthday........
