F Neuber & Sohn w/ Hex front ring ??'s
      #126948 - 14/02/09 06:36 AM

Hello all,

I'm still an admitted newbie as far a mausers go, but another has caught my eye.

Anyone heard of Franz Neuber & Sohn?

Are large ring 98 with hexagonal (OK maybe octagonal) front rings very common?

This piece is stocked in the manlicher style, but very very slender stock.

Thanks for any input.

My reference says Franz Neuber made rifles in the town of Wiener-Neustadt, Austria which is about 50 miles from Vienna. In business from 1901 to 1939. Any chance of photos?

I'm having a heck of a time with the camera & lighting today, but here are a few pics.

It is inscribed "Franz Neuber & Sohn Gewehrfabrik Wienerneu, Stadt Na"

I know the recoil pad has to go. And a replacement forend tip, what should that be, horn, ebony, sterling, steel??

And some cleanup.....

Mark: That's a fine looking stutzen. What's the cal.? Generally these will have a horn or steel forend tip. The scope mount bases are classic "Vienna" style and will use the same type of spring mounts commonly seen on Mannlicher Schoenauer rifles. Love that hex ring, but the pad has to go.

Thanks again Dons,

It is 8x57(323), and luckily the bore is great, I anticipate hunting accuracy even with the very slender barrel.

Would a Silvers repro pad, or modern Pachmyer pad be "acceptable" a checkered steel "Neidner" butt plate, or custom build a horn one????

Don't see a need for a pad on an 8x57. IMHO, a nice steel trap door buttplate and steel tip combo or basketweave horn plate with horn tip combo would complete the classic look that this rifle deserves.

mark.as most german rifles, these type mausers have much more time into them than most british rifles ,nice find. what is the LOP before you take that butt off? might end up too short ,trapdoor butts are ok if you have the balls to drill a hole into the stock!!usually horn type butts are found unmarked (no makers name) at gun shows wait till you find the right one , the pad may have been put there because the LOP was too short for the previous owner , ....paul

Thank you all for the input gents,

The stock is only 13.5" to the front trigger excluding the pad.

The inletting is still visible from the spur at the heel, I think I'll keep some rubber on it & keep it stretched out to 14.5".

I've convinced myself that the forend tip should be horn, firstly to match the grip cap, secondly because there is no means of mechanical attachment (no pin, dowel nor screwholes) so I beleive the original was simply glued on.

The rear sight is a wonder of craftsmanship, but I cannot get a clear photo. Although it is a single standing leaf, it is adjustable by a vertical screw which adjusts the height by meaans of a vertical dovetail arrangement. The parts fit together so precisely I did not originaly notice the multiple pieces.

That is a very nice double rifle. I would appreciate that scan very much, thanks.
