Kimber Talkeetna in .375 H&H (Blind Magazine)??
      #127489 - 19/02/09 07:07 AM

Has anyone shot or does anyone own this rifle? I held it at the Dallas Safari Club show and I really liked it. I am wanting an all weather .375 to use as a bear gun for Alaska and this seems to fit the bill. The only thing I did not realize until later was that it had a blind magazine which I do NOT like. It has a "shad belly" stock allowing 4 rounds in the magazine which I like but I was wondering if anyone knew if it would be possible to mill out this stock to allow for a Oberndorf style drop mag floorplate and trigger guard assembly like the one that they put on the Caprivi? It looks like the Sunny Hill model that Brownells sells could work. Who could do this type of work and make it look good?

I have shot this at the local range--and handled several of them at shows--both the Caprivi and Talkeetna..

All I have read and seen--they shoot quite well..my only complaint, and this is purely personal but even more so in the Caprivi--is I thik they are both to wide or thick at the forend for my personal tastes...

Have a stainless Sako model 75 in .375 that shoots really well with both factory and handloads..you might consider as well..and does not have a blind magazine..

Thanks for the info on shooting/handling them. The one that I handled at the DSC show was very nice. The Caprivi was pretty sharp as well but I already have a wood stocked DGR in .416 Rem. I do see what you were talking about on the forearm of the Caprivi. I felt like they could have done a little bit better job shaping the wood stock on those rifles (even though it is probably the nicest DGR available today). I have looked at the Sako's and they are really nice. However, my personal taste calls for a mauser style bolt with controlled round feed on my DGR's. I have no doubt that a Rem M700 or Sako 75 are perfectly great for this task as well but that is just my taste at the moment. For my all weather bear gun, I have even looked at trying to pick up one of the old Winchester M70 Classic Stainless rifles in .375 H&H since they are not nearly as expensive as their wood stocked Safari Express counterparts. The only thing with the Classic Stainless is that I would want to change the rear sight, add the barrel band sling swivel, and probably re-stock it to a drop belly style synthetic stock as well. I know... I am picky.

I had a Caprivi and Loved it and the Talkeetna.....until I had a chance to handle/shoot a Dakota Safari with them in a side by side comparison. I sold the Caprivi, didn't buy the Talkeenta and am saving for a Dakota.

I agree the Caprivi seems a bit portly. I was told by Kimber that the Talkeetna has the blind mag for strength. The stock would handle recoil if cut out for the bottom metal.

Hmmm. That is interesting about the stock strength. I fogured it was just becasue their Montana (other stainless rifles) had a blind box so they kept it similar. I guess the sotck would need to be strengthened if I were to try this. I would think you would want to for sure glass bed the area around the box for strength. More things to think about.
