Double Rifle Maker I've Not Heard Of
      #12695 - 28/03/04 03:09 PM

Found this website for a double rifle maker I've not heard of, nor do I know what type of action they use to build up their double express rifles.

http://www.martscustoms.com/express_doubles.htm

On the above page, click on picture for a close-up. Picture may be even further enlarged when the curser is held to the lower right of the picture and the arrowed "enlargement" box pops up.

Another page listing the large bore calibers with info:

http://www.martscustoms.com/big_rifles.htm

Then, for the .50 caliber (and larger) fans, see:

http://www.martscustoms.com/best_big_50_caliber_rifles.htm

On this last page, as you scroll down, you will see a monster of a round that dwarfs the .50 BMG. With a muzzle energy of 32,000 ft./lbs. and a range of 8,000 meters, it's called the 14.5x114MM Soviet (a.k.a. 14.5MM B-32). Also shown is a picture of the rifle that fires this round. Long-range elephant plinking anyone?

Regards,

Doubles in most calibers for $2500?

The price is right...

They're not giving much away on their web-site, but the pic certainly looks like a double rifle conversion from a shotgun. The straight-hand stock, and lack of barrel taper, are a bit suspicious. Nothing wrong with double rifles on shotgun actions, mind, ( ), but I'd be wanting a closer look before filling out the order form!

I go along with Marrakai, the upland stock is a dead give away! Like him, I think this is a "LINED" shotgun, and a cheap shotgun at that. Not well done, either, if that picture is any indication! A good set of locks can't be made for $2500, much less a real double rifle!

This guy showed up on the H&R/NEF fourm a few months ago, (before they shut it down) he had answers for everything but couldn't back it up. He told everyone what they wanted to hear, and that he had this great shop set up. One of the guys on the fourm actually drove 17 hours to see his shop, he looked around for 15-20 minutes, then turned around and went home. It seems Mart streched the truth about his shop and skill. He was all set to take money from everybody on the fourm until this guy got back to the board to report on him. All of a sudden he wasn't posting anymore. Take it for what it's worth, just be carefull sending any money before you look in to him for yourself. One way you can do that is go to the H&R/NEF Centerfire thred on Graybeardoutdoors.com and ask around. The guy that drove 17 hours is posting there, do a search for Mart and you will get an eye full.

Good luck,
Photog

Rockfish, I'd like to know how you came by this information. I, like a quite a few others, have viewed the site and it gives no information about the doubles at all. What is the shotgun action used, what kind of barrels are used, are the shotgun barrels cut off at the receiver and rethreaded, etc. Most importantly of all what calibers are supposed to be offered? How much is it supposed to weigh?

475,

Mart says that the guns are built on 10 gauge frames and others. How's that for double talk?

I think this is the same guy that was advertizing he was making barrel's for the NEF/H&R frames,, could never get an answer out of him about fitting and cost.

Saw another maker listed in the "Gun List" EVOLOTION DOUBLE GUNS,, this month's copy just above Searcy's add. any one ever heard of them?

Hell, that's one rough lookin' bit of gear!
Looks to me like the shottie tubes have been cut off a couple of inches forward of the hinge pin and a set of riflebarrels have been sleeved in.
You can see what looks like a join where the shottie tubes have been lopped and also there is a step in the quarter rib at the same location.
Possibly the thing still retains the shottie rib up to the join and then a higher rib section has been added!!

I agree with "4seventy" on his assessment of the roughness of the looks of this double rifle. Indeed, when looking closely at the picture above, it's pretty obvious where the barrels were lopped off and sleeved.

When I initially posted this thread, I was able to easily access the site with the "express_doubles" address as listed, but attempting to do so now--you get nowhere! (Makes you wonder...)

In any event, I see the shop's address listed as:

M Custom Guns
59-B Cookeville Highway
Carthage, TN 37030
Tel (Toll-Free): 1-866-735-1230
or: (615) 735-1230
Hrs: M-F 8AM-6PM, Sat., 8AM-2PM (Central Time)

They list an e-mail address: mcustoms@twlakes.net

I also tried looking for threads related to "Mart" on the Graybeard Forums--just out of curiosity, not as an interested customer--but couldn't find any threads on this particular shop. CAVEAT EMPTOR!
