I've been watching Sky News which is full of the dreadful fires and floods you guys are getting and hope no forum members are affected?

I've sent a few PMs to John lately and haven't had an answer so hope esp that he's OK.

All you blokes need is famine and you'll have had the lot!

Fires all over Victoris, our southern state and some in New South Wales. Floods in Queensland where 60% of the state is affected.

That's Australia.

Seems some of the fires in Vic were deliberately lit. Death toll could exceed 200+. That's manslaughter in my book. We have pretty tough laws about (not) cutting down trees and bush and maybe that will be reviewed.

Thanks for your concern. There are a lot of Aussies in a bad way.

One self employed concreter lost his home, truck, shed and only had left the T-Shirt and shorts he was standing in. He told a TV crew his loss was nothing compared to the neighbours who had lost the man of the house. He hadn't lost perspective.

Personally, if those fires were started deliberately, I reckon the ought to hang the bastard(s) that set them.

Does anyone know if John is in any of the affected areas? I don't know much about vinyards but would have thought it'd take bloody years to replace productive vines.

G'day Steve,

John is in South Aust. and at this stage I don't know of any fires in his district. He sometimes goes offline for awhile at a time and, like me, is probably harvesting winegrapes atm.

I'm a couple of hundred km's north of the fires and safe but my thoughts are with the people in trouble. My cousin lives at Kinglake (one of the bad spots) and apart from losing her woodshed and chook shed she is ok. One of her neighbors was Brian Naylor, ex news reader that tragically lost his life along with his wife.

My thoughts to one and all.

Guys,

Thanks for letting me know. Every time I look at the news, it's getting worse!

I got caught in a bushfire in Mozambique some years ago and it ain't a pleasant feeling. From what they're showing on the TV here, you guys have a hundred times worse than my experience.

Although they haven't mentioned the wildlife populations, I guess they've also taken a hammering!

A guy on the news has just said the fire travelled 25 miles in 4 minutes............ surely that can't be right can it?

The fires move like an Express Train which is what you would expect with 100km hour winds behind them.

They also have the roar of a 747 and of course Superheated
gas to 1000 degrees in front of it.

The fires also created their own weather pattern, lighting etc.

I thought it was part of the cold front that moved through but then I realised that it was the smoke above my house
and to the North that was causing it. (I am just South West of the major fires, to the WEST of Melbourne if you look on a Map).


I will try to find out how fast it was moving.

I am on the edge of that fire zone,all of those towns mentioned in reports are very close to me,we were warned to be prepared for ember attacks yesterday and last night.The air was full of black ash and charcoal that will last for months unless rain comes.

Fire preps and fire watch inhaling the constant thick smoke here is real shit....but we cannot complain as we have lost nothing unlike the thousands that have.


Being in a rural community amongst high hills has been three nights watching from high for more threatening outbreaks.

Yesterday we donated 60 large rolls of hay to try and alleviate farmers that have lost the lot,lots and lots more needed and any donations would help the Aussie communities.


There are many links set up to accept donations including direct bank deposits,please help....even if its only a fiver.

Anyone that has ever been exposed to the speeds of wildfire in our eucy bush will tell you how fast the fire spreads,crowning where the fire jumps from tree top ridges to the next one and the next and so on can have a fire appearing miles away in minutes....I had the experience of driving at 75 miles per hour ( yes MPH) with my wife as a fire outstripped us as it was alongside the road back in the big 80`s fire,yes it is incredible and hard to believe but thats the way it is.

A simple demo with a eucy branch held over a fire will soon show how quick as its virtually an explosion.

25km in 4 minutes is 375 km an hour.

The wind does move fire. I've seen the wind lay the smoke down on the unburned grass and the super heated gases in the smoke instantly ignite a mile of prairie in a wompf that sucks the air out of you lungs.

Arson resulting in death is murder in most places I worked.

Ha nowhere near. 9 plus hours drive away.

I was in Victoria a while ago on holiday so couldn't answer your PMs. Reasonably busy with pre-vintage at the moment. But waste too much time on the net during lunch or breaks.

Will answer soon.


As for vines, saw a photo of a burned out Yarra Glen vineyard from the air. Just black stumps. Must have had dry grass ground cover in the vineyard to burn like that. Bit of a worry as I have dry grass ground cover now. But I assume that vineyard was surrounded by forest to have been burned off like that.


Sad day for many thousands of people in Victoria. Huge loss of life, houses and property. Huge loss of stock, and wildlife too. Bushfires happen every now and again but this was a bad one. Hopefully most of the fires were naturally started and not deliberately lit. One quite concerning rumour going round as to a possible cause at the moment (ie terrorist links). However firebugs are just as likely if intentionally lit.

PS I don't know of any forum members in trouble or even guys on the net/other forums in general. Except one where relatives might be affected. Some guys are firefighters however.

Volunteer fire fighters in Oz are true upstanding members of the community. I would have done it when younger (and fitter!) but can't hear or respond to alarms in time where I live.

However fast it travels, it looks helluva fast to me and I'm sure it must be frightening as hell and I feel for everyone involved. I've gotta say your PM looks like he's reacting well......... certainly a lot better and more sympathetically than I'd have expected the 'one eyed Scottish idiot' in the UK to react in similar circumstances.

The fires are close to where I am,in a valley there is one just cresting a hill about 10K's North and one on another ridge about 10-15 K's west of us, the wind is pretty favourable at the moment so with any luck the house will survive.

The biggest trouble is I am 2000 miles away on the other side of Australia working on a gas pipeline, and I'm not gonna fly out untill Monday night. My dad does some waste removal work for a local council, and went into barricaded off areas. He said that they still had bodies under houses, and the cars in which people died in were just starting to be moved away now, and blue body bags were everywhere.

Great news Shakari,there are so many willing to donate and it will all help.

We are still under threat here from the fires in the range,it has burnt out 100,000 hectares (2.2 acres per hec) and is continually breaking containment lines.Smoke and constant ash falling is a reminder of what is "over the hill" we cannot see from our highest hills due to low vis.

On another sad note there are quite a few members of the hound hunting fraternity here that have lost all of their hounds in these fires and some of these fellas have lost theeir houses too,nothing of course compared to losing loved ones but none the less some of those faithful hounds were almost family.

JH the vineyards in the YV that went under were burnt due to the incredible heat from these fires,the fkn earth burnt mate,almost.

It wouldnt have mattered if under vine weeding was a bare earth policy or not on that black day.

Do you guys have a lot of fireplanes & helicopters out there?

Over here in my part of South Africa we have a lot of commercial woodland (mostly gumtrees or various kinds) probably not as much as you guys though...... but we have a shit load of fireplanes and a few choppers, so when we get a fire, it's usually put out within a few hours.

Good onya Shakari,great news and thanks from Australia.

As far as gum trees we are the gum tree capitol of the world with MILLIONS of acres that are constantly under threat and do contribute to the fire problems here immensely as seen in this SMH graphic today the green areas are uninhabited and gum tree heavens.
The people suffering built in amongst the bush areas and its these trees that spread the fires so quickly.

We may be a little runt of a state in land size compared to the other mainland states but there are still 227,000 sq kilometres of Vic land,thats 141 thousand sq miles and so much is bush...green cat loving tree huggers have kept it so.
