Question .577 NE
      #125622 - 02/02/09 02:35 AM

Can anybody give me info on the .577 NE cartridge in 23/4 inch length as opposed to the regular 3 inch length? The rifle in question is stamped 650 grain bullet and 75 grains cordite but African Rifles and Cartridges show the load as 650 grain bullet and 90 grains.

John , I belive the rifle is a Light Cordite or Nitro for Black , NOT a 577NE or not full Nitro , full nitro in 2 3/4 is 650Gr with 90Gr of Cordite , some were 750Gr also , so that rifle is proofed to Black Powder pressure loads , I think ?

Taylor also talks about the 75gn load in African Rifles and Cartridges. If I recall, he called is perfect medicine for cats.

Thanks for the input, I have done a little more digging and yes it would appear that we have an original nitro for black loading. Photos will follow ASAP. First I have to decide if she would be a wise purchase.

john

depending on price, i think it would be one of your wisest buy's in a long time, if you search this forum you will find that a lot of the guys here are lusting for what you have at your finger tips, even guy's with a lot of other dbl. rifles to chose from.

from what i can read it is regarded a up to and included on buffalo caliber.

best regards

peter

There were apparently several 'light nitro' loads for the .577 x 2 3/4: the 65gr Cordite load equalling the original BP cartridge, a 75gr Cordite load, and the 90gr Cordite or 'full nitro' load.

There was also a 750gr projectile load for the 2 3/4 case.

Here's my take on the .577 x 2 3/4 cartridge, for those who haven't seen it before: .577 Light Nitro

John: I wouldn't let a decent 2 3/4 chambered .577 double get away if I were you. They are simply marvellous things.

As an aside: a well-known A&N Webley screw-grip double in the Northern Territory (known as 'Stumpy' due to the shortened barrels following an accident!) was originally a 65gr Cordite gun, but was re-regulated for the 90gr load when the surgery was performed. Eventually the ribs sprung loose (!) and it has now been sensibly restored to its original regulation.

In my opinion 650gr.bullet and 75gr. cordite is the standart load for a 577NE/2"3/4 ! My old 577NE/3" was regulated for 650gr. nickel coated bullets and 90gr. of cordite. In a second time it was reproofed for 750gr. bullets and 90gr. cordite.

I wonder what they scarred up the water table with? Looks to be hot blued. How are the barrels? Joining still tight?

What is the price? In Can$?

Nice looking gun, but what are all those marks on the water table ?

It's unusual to get marks like that in such a protected place.

Looks like it's be hit with a chisel a few times.

Still a buyer if all other things check out.

Those marks are at the same angle. Maybe it was dropped on something. Pretty deep and plenty of them. It won't hurt the function but they are blued over so it must have been awhile ago.

Peter so that is $16,000CAN? Without seeing the whole rifle it seems about $2500US + too much.

I would put it at under 10k US

This rifle sold at Holts a few years ago for around ENG $3000 pounds as a Nitro for Black ,butt stock & fore end are replacment & it was 12Lbs 4oz , a rough restock even has filler around the locks & wavey fore end wood ! I think they are asking double what it's worth IMO

Cabelas have this rifle listed $16,999.00 US, today we have to add 25% to get Canadian dollars. In fairness to Cabelas their best cash price is $14,500. She is an interesting rifle but not worth that price to me.

Thanks for all the info I have received, both here and privatly.

I'm going to retract that statement, now that I have seen the asking price!!

The gun at Cabelas is a nice gun, but I`ve personally never liked the combination of top-lever and hammers...its neither fowl or fish really. The .500BPE H&H at Champlins with hammers and underlever, is a much better buy taken price in consideration aswell..but ofcouse, if one wants a .577 he doesn`t look near a .500cal.

Well, lucky we all have our own diverse views on things, it certainly makes the world a more interesting place.

I happen to think that top-lever hammer is the most elegant configuration possible for a vintage double, shotgun or rifle. If it happens to be TLH ejector, then its as close to perfection as you can get IMHO.

Having said that, the gun pictured above is heavily refinished, incorrectly, and has serious damage to the action-flats, suggestive of mistreatment. That gun would be lucky to fetch US$5000 in Australia, that's for sure.

I would not be put off the .577 Express by that offering, but would be looking elsewhere.

Yeah.
It's a "hammer" gun in more ways than one!

I happen to own a top-lever hammer double rifle and I think they are near perfection.

* Side locks
* Top lever snap action
* True round action
* Carry loaded safe
* De-cock-able
* Beautiful
