sheer fun - no wonder what is that smile at the end of the vid about - congrats on stock (you actually poke me out of the den - my Merkel is out for a stock touch up as we speak )

P.S. Do you always put safety on/off after reloading - before the shot?

You don't miss a thing at the range I like to play it safe, I like to have the rifle on safe when I close it.
Next time I will keep my rifle hot when reloading.

André

Here is a 20 bore Boss SxS made in the 1960’s. I can’t imagine a higher quality SxS shotgun from a better maker, but it still has a very, plain piece of wood. The photo is not the best, but you can clearly see the wood is sub standard for what we would expect today on a new Boss.

I think that is a beautiful piece of wood. Burl and swirls and feather and curls look really fancy but don't always make a strong, stable stock. I prefer a straight grained stock that will last through thousands of rounds without chipping or cracking. I'm not saying you can't have a strong stock with extra figure, but quite often people use/buy a stock just based on the figure. There are a lot of fine looking guns with cracked wrists, broken forends, and chips in the heel of the butt to prove it. A stock with the best qualities of structure and the best in figure is very difficult to find and usually comes at considerable cost, i.e. more than most people are willing to absorb as part of the cost of their gun.

Gentlemen

One thing amazes me though why on earth does so many double rifles come without oil worked stocks? Not even the grain has been sealed? I have seen this on Doubles from Heym, Krieghoff and now this Sodia? The wood is great and the engraving very nice. Why not finish the product by giving the stock some grain sealer and a cote or two at least? this could be done in two days while other work was being done.

It takes more than a couple of quick applications and two days to dry. See below:

Quote:

raising the grain by repeatedly sanding, wetting and heat-drying the wood until it was as smooth to the feel after drying as after sanding; hot lindseed oil (I believe) was applied and rubbed in with the palm of the hand and rubbed again once a day for a week.

Time and effort costs. You get what you pay for. You have a wonderful rifle but the stock finish is one of the corners they cut so they could offer it for sale at the price you paid. Luckily, you know how to do the stock finishing and you were able to invest your own time at no cost and the end result is that you have a gun with a very nice stock.
