Help with research on importing new SXS double rifle line
      #125196 - 27/01/09 06:11 AM

I'm trying to do some early research into the feasibility of importing a line of new SXS double rifles. I would like to have input from the knowledgeable here. I need some answers to a few questions and any other input on what would sell here in the U.S. not in Europe.

Please keep in mind that I'm trying to keep overall costs down to the affordable range not the dream gun.

Two options below.

A.

1. What would you pay for a basic off the shelf boxlock double rifle with full length ribs and express sights?

2. I need a list of top three rimmed calibers wanted and expected weight for each one.

3. Barrel length?

4. What is the least amount of and what kind of engraving would you expect it to have standard?

5. What options interest you? i.e. scope mounts, ejectors, more engraving, auto safety, upgraded wood and so on.

6. If scope mount what kind?

7. Stock dimensions for off the shelf?

8. Style of butt pad?

9. Any other info that you want to add.

B.

Just describe your idea of an inexpensive off the shelf double rifle. What you would expect and what you would pay for.

Thanks Mike

The bottom of the market is around 10,000us. A big bore in the 5000 range would be nice.

2. I need a list of top three rimmed calibers wanted and expected weight for each one.

450/400, 470, 500, 9.3x74R, .308/.338 Marlins....???? 7 1/2lbs on the light calibers up to 11 for the 500.

3. Barrel length?

700mm

4. What is the least amount of and what kind of engraving would you expect it to have standard?

english scroll border

5. What options interest you? i.e. scope mounts, ejectors, more engraving, auto safety, upgraded wood and so on.

All

6. If scope mount what kind?

EAW style

7. Stock dimensions for off the shelf?

14 3/4" LOP 1 1/2" DAC 2" DAH

8. Style of butt pad?

Silvers or red deccelerator

9. Any other info that you want to add.

Go with the proven W&S boxlock action

Here's my thoughts Mike,
1. What would you pay for a basic off the shelf boxlock double rifle with full length ribs and express sights?
6K plus
2. I need a list of top three rimmed calibers wanted and expected weight for each one.
9.3X74R, 450/400, 450NE, 500 NE
3. Barrel length?
26"

4. What is the least amount of and what kind of engraving would you expect it to have standard? None for the basic rifle, more as options
5. What options interest you? i.e. scope mounts, ejectors, more engraving, auto safety, upgraded wood and so on.

Options of a Tally QD oe EAW or Claws The option of upgraded wood ect is a must.

6. If scope mount what kind?
Leupold as the basic with options for others as requested.
7. Stock dimensions for off the shelf? 15" LOP so it can be cut down if needed

8. Style of butt pad?
Silvers.

I would suggest that there are plenty of affordable double rifles now being imported that are quality firearms, and also a few that are manufactured here in the US. You are looking at a very limited sales potential at best, and with this current economic disaster you should need a huge capital write off if you are serious about a venture such as this. Just my opinion.

Look for a market niche that isn't occupied yet. I don't think the volume/margins are there to compete with established players.

I agree, plenty of guns out there of good and average quality, limited market, changing economy.

I reckon you are 5 - 8 years too late.

Plenty of other things to invest in for a much better return.

Before Christmas I found one dealer in Australia who was disappointed by the choice of new DB rifles here. Who knows? It may be that certain rich Americans, disillusioned with the stock market and even the safety of US banks, might be interested in investing in rarely seen, good-quality doubles.

I wish you the best of luck. You are looking to enter a difficult market at a difficult time. With a new product that doesn’t have brand recognition.
Most of the recommendations are good. I think you would want to bring it in a little long so they can be cut to measure for the customer and their preference in pads installed. Double trigger and only in the basic configurations to start. I would start with a limited caliber selection 9.3X74R 450/400 450 31/4 and 470. and maybe if the maker can make it weight appropriate a 500. All of these have ammo available.

Bill, Your list of chamberings is good, but I would add at least one smaller caliber. I can't imagine owning double rifles without something in the 7mm to 8mm range. 7x57R, 7x65R, 30/40 Krag, 8x57JRS - these are marvelous cartridges and totally every-day useful in North America.

The boomers - .450/400, .450 3.25", .470 and .500 all have appeal, but their uses are so limited that only a man of wealth can use one. Few of us can afford a safari in Africa; and if we do, it's likely to be once in a lifetime.

The calibers I mention are great "woods" guns. The average white tail hunter or black bear hunter will see the reason to have one. He needs no ticket to Africa for their use. You get Americans thinking that way, and the market will open for lots of sales. That's the way it is on the continent of Europe.

And in those 'lighter' everyday calibres, nothing will sell as well as 30-06 and 45-70.

For the American market I think you may do well staying away from some of the African calibers.( I know, blasphemy)
At any rate something like the .308 Marlin, .450 Marlin, 45/70 would probubly go over well. If you could go with rimless rounds (I know, blasphemy again) a .270, 30-06, .300 Win mag, .338 Win mag, .375 H&H, .416 Rem mag, and maybe a .458 Lott/ Win mag, all calibers the average guy could walk into most any hunting shop and buy ammo for without spending a full days pay for it.

Can't say too much but yes he would, if he could get them s/h. He was interested to hear about Alex Beer's double rifles, and thought they sounded reasonably priced, assuming they work well.

I could get him a fair few 2nd hand WR's, Holland's, but he'll just be like everyone else, want them for nothing. so he can re sell them.

Plenty of good guns out there.

If he wants 2nd hand stock, buy them overseas and import them.
