A belated thanks from this Aussie, Steve.
I felt a little unpatriotic on the day, though. The tides were great for a crack at the barra, so I left the cricket to the zealots and spent the day in our local harbour's 'middle arm'!
Fresh grilled barramundi fillets taste better than greasy snags on the barbie any day (can't believe I'm admitting to this!)

Thanks Steve,
I spent it working. Had to transport (I'm a Paramedic) one of our own who had downed 18 mid-strength beers during the day and then decided to check his pig trap.
Result: One small boar with lots of fight+drunk pig chaser+VERY sharp knife = Lacerated hand cut from web between index and middle finger down to the centre of the palm.
Got two litres of Hartmanns into him and had a hell of a time trying to stop the bleeding. First time ever I've had to consider using a tourniquet, but then he would have lost the hand. Last heard he was off to Sydney for micro surgery. Top fella, hard working, self employed, community minded bloke who enjoyed a bit of pig chasing. Made a bad decision.
(The little boar made off through the open trap door too, cheeky bugga, good luck to him spreading his genes).
Even when firearms are not involved, please stay off the grog when involved in our sport.
Also had an email from Zim friends now in Perth with just two more years to wait till citizenship. Yes, we are the lucky country and I'll work damn hard to make sure my children get the benefits that I enjoy living here.
Cheers,

I'd also rather go fishing than watch the cricket..... actually, I'd rather watch paint dry than watch the cricket! - I've gotta say, from what we see here on the TV, the Aussies and the Kiwis have some tremendous fishing available.
As for checking pig traps when pissed as a rat...... that really is a dnagerous game huh!

I spent Australia Day driving from Melbourne back towards SA along the Great Ocean Road with its scenic cliffs, butte islands, and lovely seascapes. Lunch and dinner in a couple of seafood restaurants. 43 degrees celsius that day (or around that number), the same the next and close to 47 degree C (117 deg F !!!) the first day home. Six days in a row over 40 (104 F)
Was in Melbourne's Chinatown for Chinese New Year's Eve (the night before Australia Day) and enjoyed a Thai meal.
