Falling Block Rifle

A 450/.400, 3" Farquharson single barrel rifle, 24" Krupp barrels with excellent bore and rifling. Sights one standing, three folding on short base, bead foresight, sling eyes. Side safety catch, lightly engraved action and original bluing. New stock and forend, L.O.P. 14 3/4" to steel butt plate. Horn forend cap. Overall condition excellent and ready to use. Weight 10 1/2 lbs.

Man, isn't old world craftsmanship great? Iffn yagotta ask, ya cain't afford it. Probably an arm and a leg, maybe a testicle also.

...thanks for responding...seems like a reasonable price for a collector or a historically-oriented hunter...i am in the market for a traditional break-open single (with mounts) and just took delivery of a special order beretta ou (two barrel set) and, thus, have no appetite at the moment...

...you've caught me...being a traditionalist, i don't own a digital camera, and will probably never buy one...just make do with my leica c3, canon eos, etc...

I think it's like having a Holland&Holland / Mauser bolt rifle.
I assume that the Gibbs action was salvaged from an older rifle and used to build a "new" rifle. Kind of like the Dakota Legend shotgun. Somebody makes it (Italian import) and somebody else puts on a coat of finish and checkers it and puts their name on it (Dakota).

It's my understanding that all of the PD Farqurson actions were made in Belgium, so it's not such a stretch.

thefinegunmaker - I agree, this might well be a case of "badge engineering" - the English gun trade was notorious for it - and it still goes on today as you have observed!

But, in this case, I suspect that the action is in fact Belgian made as were it seems many of the British retailed Farquharsons, except, of course George Gibbs, who made his own actions. It is quite common to find Gibb's rifles, usually in original black powder chamberings that have been rebarreled for nitro cartridges by other makers.

Normal practice in the English gun trade was for the new barrel to be signed by whoever fitted it. Close examination of the Gastinne Renette would elucidate this.
