It is a shame that Ruger screwed up their 404 chamberings in the RSMs...for about half this price.

Maybe they'll get their 404 act together now, and bring the caliber back out in the RSM. I would like a 404 some day, but not in a Winjammer after all the trouble I and my friends had with the Safari Classics.

I'm not a Ruger fanatic; their guns tend to work, however...More than I can say for Winchester. It seems that they have to charge $3,000.00+ for one of their $900.00 rifles that works.

Still, I am glad to see this new version and hope all Winchester's problems get solved. They had been the American standard for all my early hunting life.

For this price I think they could have had a drop magazine and a forend cap of some dark wood...

I'll just wait on the rifle that John Ricks is building for me on the Montana Rifle Co. Long Action and Lothar-Walther barrel!

I am going to see if I can get a "Custon African Express" from the custome shop--- it is not listed in the catalogue-- but I am thinking it will ge a great investment and I like it better than the "African" rile.

I'll bet that your Ricks rifle isn't a heck of a lot more than the Winchester. What is it setting you back?

Well, let's see now, 3+10 carry the 1. . . .
Can't say I've put a pencil to all the parts, but let's narrow it a bit.

Montana 1999 Long Action RH #423 $350.00
Lothar-Walther .423 Magnum Sporter Contoured barrel, shipped 201.00 (I have 2 of these)
A very nice, Black Walnut stock from Robert Watts at WattsWalnut $200.00 (I own 3 of his blanks)

John's services plus sights, bands, bluing, truing, stocking and checkering around $1,600. I'm sure there will be shipping charges.

Now that's not counting the BELL 404 Jeffery Brass, CH4 dies, or Woodleigh bullets and powder.

So around a $2,500 bill for a custom made to order rifle that will fit me.

To tell you the truth, the greatest pleasure in all of this has been talking with John, Robert, Woody at Lothar-Walther, the good folks at CH, and Dan at Montana and getting all the pieces together.

Not sure when the rifle will be ready. John is going to mount the barreled action in a try stock and send it to me to shoot. When we started this project, I told John that the one thing he would never get, is a phone call from me asking, "Where's my rifle?" I know John to be a good man and I admire the man's work and I figure when he get's it ready, then I'll get it!

When the Montana Left hand Long Actions are shipped, then John has another project for my buddy. A surprise!

Rusty,

You just made my point. Why would anyone buy a Winjammer when they could have a working custom rifle for the same ...or less...than the semi-production rifles?

It is a shame that the Winchesters have not been up to snuff so far. I may try one again next year to see whether they got the production bugs out. I love the looks and feel of the Safari Classic; it would be nice if it worked...

Please keep us up to date on your great new rifle.

I agree with most of what you say L2S, however my Safari Express Mod. 70 in .375 H&H is a heck of a shooter. It's isn't near custom, and the wood could be better, but for a functional rifle it does the job smoothly!

Rusty,

I'm happy that you got one that worked peoperly. My safari partner and I bought three Safari Classics that didn't...in 416 Rem and 375. They wouldn't feed properly. All three had wood pressing the right side of the barrel at the front of the forearm, and one had a missaligned barrel. We bought the guns sight unseen...ordered in to our local FFL buddy.

My 375 was sent back to Winchester, and they sent it back "fixed". It came back still not feeding properly, and with the same caddywampous stock; they just sanded the barrel channel a tad. It looked awful! A 416 jammed every time when cycled from a full magazine.

In talking with other buyers of the Safari Classics, I found out that we were not unique in our experiences...that what we experienced was quite common.

May I ask how recently you bought your SC Win? They may have recently cleaned up their act; I hope so, as I have always been a Winchester fan.

I might add that my SS Safari in 375 functioned perfectly; I spent hours on the trigger and had a very nice 2 1/2 pound and crisp result. I sold the gun to a client who has NO idea how good the gun realy is. He needed it for his first African Safari...took a silver medal eland with it and won't sell it back to me...the SOB! For some reason, the SS Safaris seemed to not exhibit the same problems as the SC series...

I'm going with the CZ-550 for my new 404..Brockmon is doing the metal work, I'll do the stock in English persuasion...

One of the things I insist on in a Dangerous Game rifle is that my rifle holds 4 down and one up in the tube and I would rather have 20 down and two up if I had my druthers but that cannot be done...

I am amazed that Win and Montana didn't utilize a magazine that would hold 4 or 5 down..Guess they havn't hunted a lot of dangerous game...

Ray

I can put five down on my .375 Win. SS. I replaced the mag spring with one for a pre 64 .375. Easy as that.
