Ruger No. 1 tropical .458 Win. Mag.

Just picked up a pristine 1978 Ruger No. 1 tropical .458 Win Mag for $750. That's dern cheap for 5000 ft./Lbs.

That completes my three gun battery: 1987 R700LH custom .264 Win Mag., 1981 R700LH BDL .375 H&H and now the .458 Win Mag. (not including two doubles).

I felt like I need to buy a gun to commemorate our first Black president and could not decide what to buy. I figured that this rifle is about as subtle as a F15 on afterburner - so it was perfect.

Good buy Bonanza!

I had a #1 in .375H&H and didn't really like it much. Unfortunate since the wood was really great.
I figured one in .458WM was about the best choice in a rimless chambering. The .416 Rigby must be punishing with the old red buttpad - the 375 sure was.

That is a lot of fun for way less than a grand.

I used to own one in .458 and it was a fun rifle to shoot. I just bought a 1-H in .375H&H and plan on collecting all the calibers eventually.

Huvius - I found the #1 .375 to be pleasant to shoot, irons or with scope.
Pesceptive recoil varies with the shape & weight of the body.
I do not think a #1 in .416 would be pleasant. Once you start burning 100gr. of powder with a 400gr. bullet, I beg out.

Well, I was around 19 yrs old and weighed about a buck fifty then.
I figured it was the shape of the stock that directed so much recoil - just seemed to sock me pretty good.
Now I have a Westley 1897 in .450NE -(haven't fired it yet) we'll see, maybe I haven't learned anything!

Congrats! What a find. I also aquired one of these a few months ago. Mine was more recent than yours, made in '92 if I remember correctly. It was my introduction to the world of big bores. I LOVE IT!!! I was extremely surprised to discover how pleasant it is to shoot. It certainly won't be my last. I am trying to decide whether to get another in 9.3x74, 375h&h or 450/400 next. Or maybe a nice bolt gun in 375 or 458. Or maybe just hold out and get a double. I have a 300 weatherby that's begging to be turned into a 416 Taylor or maybe a 458wm (or possibly 470AR). Just too many choices!!!
