favorite plainsgame species???
      #12207 - 23/03/04 06:19 AM

OK, I'm getting down to the the nitty gritty.

I've got to put together a proposal for the "boss" on a plainsgame hunt for next year and am trying to choose which species...

we're still between namimia and RSA, but that said... RSA surely has more available species, but there is something about namibia that really appeals to me from a "wild" standpoint...

here is the list for namibia:

Kudu
Warthog
Gemsbuck/Oryx
Steenbok
Springbuck
Duiker
Hartmann's Zebra
Klipspringer
Burchell Zebra
Damara Dik-Dik
Eland
Hartebeest
Giraffe
Blue Wildebeest
Sable
Common Impala
Waterbuck
Blesbok
Black Wildebeest

I don't have the RSA list... but it is a bit longer.

help me out people, which are your favorites and why???

If I were doing a typical plains game hunt of 10-14 days in Namibia, and it was my first hunt my list would be as follows:
Kudu-Namibia has some monsters, and they're way cool
Gemsbuck-same reason
Springbok-the Kalahari Springbok from Namibia is the largest subspecies of Springbok
Hartmann's Mountain Zebra-can't get them anywhere else
Waterbuck-some of the Namibian ranches have some huge ones
Red Hartebeest-again, some real big ones available
Black & Blue Wildebeest-just gotta have one of each
Impala-they're just too cool not to take one
Steenbok-they make a great looking life size mount done up lying down on a rock

Eland can take up many days of your hunt
Sable are too expensive in Namibia, unless you can find a great deal on one
Blesbok-I think better ones, on average come out of RSA, although some big ones do come out of Namibia from time to time
Warthog-Namibia isn't generally known for big ones because in most places the soil is too hard and rocky
Giraffe are kind of neat, I may take one next year in Namibia

Of the ones I've successfully hunted, it would be a tie between eland and mountain zebra.

One I want worst, a big kudu.

One I want, but can't afford right now, sable.

Joe.

I'm glad to see that you listed Damara Dik-Dik. Small animals aren't necessarily easy animals! Often quite the opposite.

The Damara variant as far as I know is only found in Namibia, so I'd add that on the list of "must have" from there. They're smart little buggers, and it took me quite a lot of hunting to get mine.

10-14 days is not long enough to collect all the animals you have listed unless all you do is shoot and forget about hunting.

If you're going to Namibia take only animals that are native to there. Forget the Black Wildebeast and other Game Ranch species.

In Namibia: Kudu, Gemsbok, Red Hartebeast, Mt. Zebra, Damara Dik Dik, Klipspringer, Sprinbok, Impala. If you can get one of each you've done well. Try to get them all in a Free Range State not a High Fence. They are all available both ways but their natural habitat is different so by taking all in Ranch Hunt you are taking animals that would not normally be there.

Mt Zebra is my favorite, much like Sheep Hunting only a wee bit warmer. Next is Red Hartebeast. Not because they are prettier but because of the difficulty of a stalk on a nice one in the country the live in and the size of the herds they travel with. Kudu and Gemsbok third unless the Gemsbok are in the Kalihari or the Namib Deserts. Than Gemsbok are second. Klipspringer at the same time and area as Mt. Zebra. Springbok are everywhere, Impala in the North. Damara Dik Dik are in the North and very tiny.

If you do it where they are the time is gone.

I won't be taking EVERYTHING on the list... but I really do appreciate the inputs on the native species... that's exactly what I was looking for.

I haven't hunted Namibia but probably warthog and impala are my favourites (of the moment). Cheap enough to take each safari. Impala for their graceful beauty and lyre shaped horns and warthog because they are simply beautiful.

I think there are three things to consider when going on a plainsgame hunt.
One-cost
Two-the trophy
Three-degree of difficulty in getting the animal.
Considering the above my choice would be-eland,gemsbok,ht.zebra,red heartebeast, kudu, lechwe, waterbuck, fallow deer and if affordable the sable.

I never hunted into an african ranch, so I'm gonna talk about plains game in open areas, like Tanzania, Botswana or Zimbabwe.

The first prize is for Eland, one of the most difficult animal to hunt.

My second choice is Zebra, just because the beauty of the skin.

And finally, Klipspringer is an amazing hunt and a beautyfull animal.

BTW. I've to go to RSA to hunt a giraffe

The top of my list would probably be the Zebra. To me very
few things are more "African" & remind you of your safari more
than a great Zebra Rug in your house/trophy
room. Second would be the Kudu, they are such a beautiful
animal & again make an impressive mount. I've never taken
a Sable, but they are high on my list for the next trip.

You can't go wrong with any of the animals listed, hope
to hear about your safari.

P.S. I would much rather hunt open/
free state animals & take smaller trophies than larger
ones off a game farm. However some of the game ranches are
quite large & are essentially free range, so it ends up
being whatever you are most comfortable with.
