I have a 460WM too. No problem for you! Buy the rifle that you want!

Bramble, very true. Roland at Hollands' shooting school had a friend bring in his new custom bolt action.458 Lott, synthetic stock, weight 8.5 lbs with scope !! to sight in. Before he tried it out
he asked Roland if he would like to try it. Roland respectfully declined (and this is a guy who has fired most everything and is certainly not recoil shy). I am told the chap put 2 rounds through it, bleeding nose and large headache...it was sold, though God knows who bought it. Is 12lb about right for a .500 NE ? best, Mike

All of this certainly makes the recoil of the .460 seem manageable when compared to a .577 that weighs 3 pounds more. I had a .460 with a Pendleton brake and the recoil seemed very manageable when shot in the upright position. It seemed very much like a Krieghoff in .500NE I've shot many times. I've since sold the .460Wby to my brother and replaced it with a .416Wby.

It does seem to justify a weight of 14-15 pounds as ideal for a .577 with a 26" barrel.

Have fun with this order, AKA!

I can see it now; sitting at the table with many variations of specs crossed out and re-written on several sheets of paper with the company catalog at your side and an order form safely to the side with a Mont Blanc pen waiting to be used for the first time in transferring this dream onto paper.

I will be ordering a 577 nitro next week . I want the double to come in at 11-12 pounds. Ive been told that this can be done by shortening the barrel by one inch(from 26-25 inch). My question to you pros? is there a reason not to go to 24 inches? I'm new to doubles. I understand the rifle will be regulated to 50 yards anyway. What sizes barrels do you all have ..thanks steve [/quote

I built my .577 2.75" NE with a 24" inch barrel and balanced it at 12.5 currently. Any lighter and it will beat the snot out of me. At this weight the recoil is a big push, and not a slap, or head ringer.

BTW, what a hoot it is to shoot! And its loud! Muzzle blast can be felt from behind the gun. Currently I'm regulating it to 116 grains of IMR4831 and a 650 grain Hawk bullet. This produces 1950FPS which is right at factory ammo.

AKA,
First of all congratulations on your purchase. WOW! Second, I have great respect for all those who have responded to your questions. However, if I were you, I would ask and discuss ALL of these issues with H&H. Who could possible know better? Questions of barrel length vs. velocity, weight vs. recoil, factory ammo vs. hand loads. This is why you pay them the big bucks. Mickey says “For what you are paying they can load to your specs in England” I think he means that they can “regulate” to your specs in England. I don’t mean to be a pick ass but let’s be clear. They can load to your specs and regulate to your specs. Hopefully they are the same!

Please keep all of us informed, I know everyone here is interested.

Armbar.

This may be totally off topic, but I notice that you live in California. Does California have restrictions on firearms of a caliber over .500?

Recoil isnt the only reason why it should weight that much, given the caliber and type of rifle one would think a fast second shot would be preferd

shorter barrel = more muzzle blast and more muzzle rise

That being said, a rifle that weighs more than 11 pounds is not going to go hunting with me much, so to be useful, I would want a .577 to come in at 11 lbs, regardless of increased muzzle blast.

24 inch barrels, 11 to 11.5 pounds would do me, but it's not my rifle.
Anything lighter than 11 would be too light in a .577 NE IMO.

Probably "in the heat of the moment" a difference of a pound or two won't matter or be noticed at all. I'd have to carry one for a day myself to know if I'd rather have a double weighing 11 lbs or something on the order of 13 lbs, or so. I guess I would lean toward the 11-12 lb range with 24" barrels and be happy with a rifle that's a bit easier to carry since that's the role it serves for most of the time.
